This just randomly happened to the screen a few days ago while in the middle of use. Restarting did nothing. Changing the resolution helped a bit (800x600 is what's pictured above, and that was by far the clearest option - the desktop was barely visible with native resolution).

Figured I'd check here to see if anyone has a fix before taking a trip to the Apple store, although I'm almost certain it's a pure hardware problem (hooked it up to the TV through HDMI and everything looked fine).
 
I have seen the exact same line pattern (vertically tho) on my old Apple LCD display bought in 1998 after two to three years. All I could do is to unplug/plug the ac power supply from wall to resolve it.

I had similar display issue on an iMac (maybe 2006 model), and it was due to the video 'card' overheating. Since yours is working on an external monitor, I would guess that there may be a loose connection to the display. Pretty sure it is hardware, so time to head to the shop.
