Macbook Air / iPad - First time setup

I purchased MacBook Air and iPad mini from Best Buy today and need advice to setup for the first time.
This is a gift to a family member who will be in India.

How do i setup account, etc?
Is it mandatory to setup credit card to setup account?

Below is what I am thinking.
1. Create new Apple ID - USA address
2. Setup Mac using Apple ID (No credit card required - right?)
3. Setup Itunes.
4. Setup iPad

Finally,
5. Change account address to India before leaving

Anyone has experience on this? How this works?
