Do you see many cars that ONLY have the brand logo and not the model name on the car somewhere? I don't. Same goes for a lot of other products. So apparently identifying the model of product does have functionality.
Good point. I wish they'd remove the model name from more cars, just looks tacky.

I had to check my Intel MBA to confirm if it says MacBook Air (it does). Clearly I don't spend a lot of time looking at the bottom frame of the screen...

I don't find that tacky at all, unless it's in some bizarre lettering. Now, those stick figures and most bumper stickers I do find tacky.

Are you sure it's not underneath the laptop?

I confirm that unlike the MacBook Pro, there is no engraving underneath the MacBook Air M2.
There is no official explanation but my guess is that engraving the label on the frame is considered by Apple as a sign of luxury; an "honor" specially reserved for the MacBook Pro for obvious reasons.

The “MacBook Air” and “MacBook Pro” labeling right below the screen fades into the background — one concentrates on the display after all.

Nevertheless, it does look, as another person put it, “tacky”. Stop what you're doing and go look at it. It's a hit your over the head, needless bit of marketing. We all know which computer we have — which means it serves partly as an advert to others! As has the outer Apple logo!

Perhaps the thinner bezels on the newer laptops made the lettering too small in tests to be useful.

In place of the labels, though, we now have the NOTCH!!

Yay!
