This happens like once in 2 days. The display doesn't go to sleep when I shut the top lid. it stays awake. the screen time keeps counting and I can see the light from the sides of the mac.
This started after when I updated to 11.5.1 and also after updating it to 11.5.2 the issue is still there. Is anyone else facing the same on the MacBook Air M1?

Well, my MBA loses battery gradually while sleeping too, though I'm not sure it's 8% per day. But I've never NOT had it go to sleep when I close the lid. When you open the lid again, does it even prompt you to log in or anything, or does it just stay on your desktop like nothing ever happened?

I know System Preferences > Battery > Power Adapter has an option for "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" and "Wake for network access", but those only apply when you're MBA is connected to AC power. System Preferences > Battery > Battery has no such options, nor any others that would affect the MBA sleeping (except of course the slider for "Turn display off after:" which is very confusing because it doesn't just turn off the display but also puts the computer to sleep by default when on battery power . . . no idea why Apple couldn't just call that "Sleep after:").

Got the solution :-

1. Log in with an account that has admin privileges

2. Open Terminal and run the following command:

1sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement SystemPowerSettings -dict SleepDisabled -bool NO
3. Restart the Mac (this is necessary to apply the change.)

After the restart, you should see that the Sleep command is available again in the Apple menu.

The sleep command is already available. The issue discussed in this thread is that the Macbook doesn't sleep when the lid is closed.

Where in the thread did you see someone say that the sleep command was missing?

I'm having this issue with my 2019 MBP as well. I do have the Amphetamine app but it's off when I close the lid, so it shouldn't be keeping my Mbp awake.

It really sucks to wake up, get ready for work, and see that my laptop battery is dead. "Guys, I'll be a little bit late for work while the computer charges!"

Samekind of problem here. When I put my MBA to sleep (I have external display, keyboard and mouse) it often wakes right away even if I don't touch k/m at all. Really annoying especially when I want to go somewhere and I put my MBA to sleep and it opens and logs in because my watch is still near enough =(

Mine also shines from the holes when closed. M1 Air. Noticed happens when browser is open and i closed the lid. Not everytime - from time to time, eventually turns off in 5-10 min.

What's really weird to me: I often go over a week without plugging in my M1 MacBook Air. I've had Screens (remote screen sharing program) for years, and use it to connect from my Air to my Mac Mini.

Just this last week, I was running Screens on my Mac Mini, and double clicked on my MacBook Air. To my surprise, it connected and started screen sharing. Went down to find my MacBook in my backpack. I took it into a dark closet and could see that the backlight was on!

I guess I'm not surprised, since Screens SHOULD be able to wake a mac from sleep via a network connection, but I was so surprised to see it was running without me ever opening the lid!

I think this has been happening to me. I've also used Side Car, and that sometimes has weird connection issues where it doesn't break the connection I assumed the Mac thinks it has an external monitor connected.

I am also facing the same issue, where closing the lid won't put MBA M1 to sleep plus when I open the lid (when it is shut down) it won't turn it on automatically which was one of it's feature. Factory Reset and Reinstalling the OS couldn't help.

Has anyone find any solution?

If not, I have an appointment at Apple Service centre in next two days, will share update if needed.

There is a lid sensor that almost certainly isn't working in your case.

I was also thinking the same, My MBA M1 just got repaired.

Technician at Apple Service Center first called me and told me that he will be replacing the Top Case with keyboard as the sensor is hidden under there somewhere.

However, After a few days when I reached out to him, he said "I've tried putting the new parts but its still not working" and that he has ordered new logic board.

Once the logic board was replaced (Thank God it was under warranty), the problem went away, but I am not really certain that actually the logic board has been replaced.

The only way I have tested it is by checking the SSD TBW, when I gave it for repair it was around 1.6TB written and when returned it was only 168GB written.

Hope it never happens after my warranty expires.

It definitely sounds like the logic board was replaced since the SSD flash chips are soldered on. The lid angle sensor apparently was not the problem but the sensors connection to the logic board. Random defect. Enjoy your MacBook Air.

If mine is out I usually keep the lid a little open, and this obviously won’t turn off the display. The workaround I use is to press the power button and send the Mac to the login screen. The display turns off / MacBook goes to sleep after about 5-10 seconds.

Just a heads up, I don't think this is actually (just) a sensor issue but an issue with the sleep logic. I regularly put my MBP into sleep while open and sometimes it seems to get stuck in a mode where the screen turns off, but it doesn't go into true sleep. I'll hear notification pings and wake up to it depleted in battery like it's been on and running all night. Occasionally this will happen while it's closed too (though I rarely close it because it's on a stand with something over the hinge). I'd be curious to hear from more people if replacing sensor logic boards actually fixed it for people given that my issues seem to be entirely software-based.

Mine stopped doing that when i stopped using ms teams or keep excel open active when closing the lid.
