Macbook Air M1 late 2020 doesn't turn on anymore

Hi, a while ago I noticed that one of the two USB-C ports on my MacBook wasn't recognizing flash drives and wasn't charging the Mac. The other one worked fine. Two days ago, while I was charging it, I realized that the second USB port stopped charging the Mac as well. I tried restarting it, but it was at 5% battery and hasn't turned on since.


I tried opening it up and replacing both USB-C ports with a new spare part, but nothing changed. It won't turn on at all, just a black screen. It doesn't seem to be charging. I have no idea what it could be.

Sounds like an issue with the Power Management IC (it's a chip that distributes power from USB-C ports to the battery and logic board and SoC), especially since you mentioned it won't charge and the screen stays black. You can find replacements online, but actually replacing a faulty PMIC is usually not an easy process. 😅

At minimum, you'd need a multimeter to test which chip or passive component is shorting (if at all). It's impossible to diagnose just by looking at it.

Personally I would try to replace the usb-c board first https://www.ifixit.com/en-eu/products/macbook-air-13-late-2018-late-2020-usb-c-board

If it's not that then the repair may not be worth it at all and you may be better off selling it for parts...
