I've just received my MacBook Air base model.

I haven't done much yet with it, but one thing that every reviewer confirms is how cool to the touch is.

Mine seems pretty warm on normal usage and if I push it with Cinebench 23 temps are above 80c.

Have I got a lemon?

Only 80 on a passive cooled device running Cinebench. I am surprised it is not higher. I had a fanless 12" MacBook which would reach 100C readily which didn't cause me any concern or problems.

BTW what app are you using to see temps? I have always used iStat Menus but it is only shows the SSD temp on my M1 MBA.

Just watching another review of the mba and he’s getting the same temps. Throttled to about 2.45ghz but he says it’s good

I've beaten you...mine gets to 81c on first run of Cinebench ;)

The app is called Sensei, looks like recently updated for the new macs.
Although one section still classified as “unknown”.

I suppose it is designed to reach quite substantial temperatures without active cooling but despite that, while throttling, it didn’t cool down too much and the temperature stayed pretty much the same.

Curious about other people temps

I never touch the CPU and I don't presume to know more about what temps the CPU can handle than the design engineers who set up the max-temp stuff, so I've never had an interest in checking CPU temp.

So far today my (new) M1 MBP has remained silent and cool to the touch, only warming a little when I transferred ~600GB from my external SSD.

TGPro shows max of 98c in Cinebench, more like what I was expecting. I haven't crawled through TGPro and Sensei to see exactly which sensors are being shown, but TGPro has a setting to display "highest" in the menubar.

I have every confidence Apple has paid great attention to the max CPU temp and while interesting it is pointless to second guess them or worry about the numbers.

Thanks for posting this - got me relaxed, as I also got 98c using TGPro. With Sensei - its also 80-81c
