I don't rly know what the consensus is on that , although nobody can know really .

should we at least expect something before 2023?

I'd grab a M1 rn but if the m2 launches In like 3 months id be pissed ,as I want the MBA redesign quite badly ...

resale value kinda sucks where I live sadly

Obviously I have no idea like everyone else, but it would be my guess that we would not see it until the end of the year (autumn) at the very earliest.
M1 models are now available as Apple refurbished for very good prices, so if you really need a new Mac now I think they are a good option.

what would be the trade-in value for MBA M1 base ?

no refurbished as of right now btw

TSMC 3nm volume production starts in 22H2, so the M2 Macbooks should be coming out in 22Q4 if there are no delays and Apple uses the new node for their A16 first.

seen an article about 18 months schedule, have u read it ?

true if m2 is based on a16 arch, but could as well be based.on 5nm+ a15's I suppose...

intersting ! have you got a link to an article on the topic ?

You can find many just by Googling.

“N4 is a further evolution of N5 that will enable a 6% smaller die area via an optical shrink and some further power and performance advantages enabled by BEOL (back end of line) enhancements. It continues to use N5's design rules, design infrastructure, SPICE simulation programs, and IPs. Yet, N4 will use EUV scanners for more layers, which will reduce mask counts, process steps, and costs.”

Well if M2 comes out in October of 2022 it will be based on A16.

Seems unlikely given the credible info we have. Gurman says M2 will have 10-core GPU, which is a 2x multiple of A15 GPU. The M1 was a 2x multiple of A14 GPU. He also reported M2 would only be "marginally faster" than M1, which is exactly what we saw with A14 vs. A15.

mmm. The A16 will also be based on 4nm so there could be a chance as M2 will also be on 4nm.

In any case I expect before September it will be A15 based. If M2 comes after September the successor to M1 will be A16 based.

This seems unlikely, but we can hope! The M1 Pro and Max came out after the iPhone 13 series (A15), but they have CPU cores based on the A14.

That's because they were expanded versions of M1. M2 will be totally new.

I just checked the Apple site. It is $585 today. I bought mine on sale for $799 so it may tempt me to get the newer one but by the time it comes out who knows how much the trace in value will be.

M2 is 4nm and based on A15.
Says who? A15 is 5NM+ so M2 if based on A15 will be also as a new die will cost them a lot of money. M1 Pro/Max was also on the base 5NM and not on 5NM+

Just hope they base M2 on A16 as I don't see any reason why not otherwise it is gonna take a LONG time before we see actually performance increases while Intel in the meantime has launched five new cpu lines.

as an answer to your second question

M1 Pro/Max is believed to be using N5P.

The article is old, so it refers to M1X as M2.

i was hoping it would come out this spring like the imac refresh from last year but reports are pointing for later this year

But it is not, clearly this is visible in perfomace alone compared to the norml M1.

N5P offers the choice between -10% power or +5% performance at iso-power.

MacBook Pro is a mobile device, so Apple likely chose -10% power for M1 Pro/Max transistors.
