Hi there,

I have a MBA M2 13" which I have bought last September in the Apple Store.
I just noticed a white shiny spot on the lower left corner of the display. Weird is that it only is visible on a light background. It's not visible with dark backgrounds.
Have you ever noticed something like it? It is no dirt or fat, because I can't erase/ clean it.

I do not have Apple Care but am within the first year.

Do you have any advice or solutions?
Thanks ahead.
Yvonne

Take your device to the Apple Store and see what they say. It may be a warranty issue. Only Apple can give the solution, not us.

Its a backlight fracture it is caused due to excess pressure at a particular spot on the screen. Since it's a physical damage inside the backlight there is nothing you can do to fix apart from replacing the entire display assemby.

Apple might reeplace it for free if you are in 1 year warranty even if you don't have apple care.

Thanks for the reply.
I have an appointment this Saturday in an Apple Store.
The MBA is 9 month old, therefore, it should be in the warranty.
Thanks ahead.

Please keep us updated with the results, especially for the people that may find this thread seeking similar insights about their display issues. Cheers.

The appointment was rescheduled to this Monday. The Apple technician did a diagnosis and said right away, that it is a defect of the backlighting and a known issue from previous iPads. So far, not many macs are affected. he also said, that it can’t be me fault. It is just a pixel backlighting thing. They will swap the display because it is not possible to repair. It will take about a week, therefore, I can hopefully collect it by Tuesday.
I will update again when I picked it up :)
Thanks for your help.

Just to chime in here - I had a similar issue about 2-3 months ago. I do have AppleCare though, but I asked if it would have been covered without AppleCare and they said it would have been covered. He said it's not super common with these but it does happen. He called it a "dull pixel cluster" and also got the screen replaced. It was in the lower left side of my screen just like yours. Potentially something to do with the design causing this?

But in any case - yours is getting fixed, so it's all good.

I picked it up today. It was repaired faster than expected.
The total bill would have been around $1,100 for the repair. Thank got it was covered by the guarantee.
The Genuis Bar technician said, I have 5 days to decide if I book Apple Care+.
Would you recommend that? It would be either $70/year or $300 for three years.

I kind of like the MBA, though I always had MBP, but it is sometimes really slow. Well, the RAM is quite busy, as I always have a lot of tabs open as well as up to ten programs that I use simultaneously. This MBA has 16GB RAM but it seems to deal with the power way worse than my 2017 MBP. The 2017 never had any issues with the power except of the butterfly keyboard. Therefore, is it just a RAM mismanagement or what could it be? The benchmarks on the MBA are way better compared to the 2017 MBP.
Would you buy Apple Care or just sell the MBA and get a MBP again?
I am a teacher and deal with lots of data. Currently, I do not do any video editing or else.

Thanks ahead and have a great weekend :)

So this is my view. I actually had an M1 MBP for a few months. I happened to have gotten an excellent open box deal at a large retailer - however, I couldn't deal with the weight. I use it largely at home, and it was on my lap and didn't like how it felt. What I loved were the speakers. Because I don't edit photos or videos, I didn't use the better screen as much. I did not notice a difference in how it ran though with the M2 MBA. I didn't notice that at all. So I sold the MBP and I got an M2 MBA when prices dropped - and I was much much happier with the weight. I missed the speakers, but honestly picking anything is a trade off and you have to be ok with that.

Now for the AppleCare - I would get it for 70 a year. And if you change your mind say in a year or 1.5 years, you can just cancel it and not pay more. It gives you piece of mind. But that's just me!

How can they charge $1,100 for a display assembly ? The entire MacBook Air M2 costs $1,100.

Apple repairs are one of the biggest scam on planet earth.

That's a pretty good question.
The invoice says about $412 + 19% VAT for the display, lid angle sensor $8,26 + 19% VAT + Flat Rate 2 Repair, MBA $511.76 + 19% VAT. Therefore, a huge price tag.

I paid $2,000 for my MBA because it has a 1TB SSD and 16 GB Ram.
Way too much money for what you get. My 2017 MBP 15" had cost the same back then.

Overall, as I wasn't lucky with my 2017 MBP, as I had the butterfly keyboard exchanged 3 times as well as had violet stripes on the display, I am not very happy that this MBA had its first problem after 9 month.

Is the quality dropping?! Never had issues with my 2013 MBP.

If I purchase Apple Care+ and if I would have the same problem again, do I really need to pay a $256 fee because it is a display issue? Doesn't seem fair. Or if it is only, if it is my fault but not Apple's fault?

In my view, no you wouldn't have to pay to get the same issue fixed because it's a manufacturing issue. Which is why it got covered under warranty for you. If however, it happened because say, a something came in between your screen and keyboard, like some crumbs, or something small by accident, then yes you'd have to pay the fee. But you wouldn't be paying 1100 as you would without the AppleCare.

So if there's an accident, you pay a fee, it's a manufacturing issue, you don't, if that makes sense.
