Hi all,

I’m looking for experiences from other MacBook Air M4 owners, particularly those with the Midnight finish.

I bought an Apple Certified Refurbished 15-inch MacBook Air M4 (Midnight) on 30 September 2025. After around three months of normal use, a lighter / cloudy patch appeared on the right palm-rest area next to the trackpad.

There’s been no impact, no liquid exposure, and no misuse. The rest of the enclosure (lid, edges, underside) is uniform and unmarked. The area doesn’t look like residue or abrasion — more like a change in the anodised finish that only shows under certain lighting.

I took it to an Apple Store and then through Apple Support (including a senior advisor). Engineering have classified it as external factors / cosmetic wear, so it isn’t covered under warranty. I’ve submitted a complaint, mainly due to how quickly the finish change appeared.

I’m interested to hear:

  • Have other Midnight MacBook Air M4 owners seen similar early palm-rest discolouration?
  • Did Apple treat it as normal wear, or did anyone receive a goodwill repair?
  • Any practical ways to prevent further marking (without abrasive cleaning)?

Posting partly to compare notes and partly in case it helps others considering the Midnight finish.

Thanks.

Can get a silver one next time. I guess the silver color is the color of the aluminum itself ... no colored coating to wear away.

the MBA2010 i use now outer case has no signs of wear is perfect even today.
but i effectively pratice personal and public hygiene!

Happened to my space grey 2019 16”. The only MacBook it’s happened to that I’ve ever owned. Coincidently the only non-silver MacBook I’ve ever owned.

It's "new car syndrome" ... I know it well. It's best to just accept the paint wear.

You should see the paint wear on my 2012 Honda. It's no longer shiny like when I bought it new. Such is life.

Mildly tangental, but I remember my first really beat up car which I once washed with the best wash a car wash had. That's when I got a remark of how rusty it was from an acquaintance. 😑

Sometimes once you have something looking good is when people notice the smaller blemishes.

Off topic but the first three photos look like Space Black rather than Midnight. This only caught my eye because I am planning to get my daughter the upcoming M5 MBA and she asked if it came in Space Black. I sadly said no, the closest is Midnight. Apparently, Midnight morphs into Space black in different light so perhaps she'll be happy about that.

It's important to understand that dirt of any kind is more visible on dark surfaces than on light ones. Look at car paint. White, you don't see anything; black is immediately visible. Or was it the other way around?

actually both white and black quickly show dirt

For cleaning, I recommend water with dish soap or a little glass cleaner. That should do the trick.

Always go silver. Anodised aluminium, especially so dark, will just brings problems from fingerprints, to it chipping off around the ports, to discolouration.

Mine is 7 months old, used on a daily basis with no external mice or keyboards, still looking good. Some people just seem to have particularly acidic sweat that can visibly erode even a silver finish over time.
