Why settle for an untested platform like w8 when the world's most advanced operating system OSX gets even better year after year?

Untested? Are you kidding me? Just because it's an update doesn't mean it's not based on proven code. There's a reason 90% of business computers run Windows. Your testing population doesn't get any bigger than that!

90% of businesses run on traditional win7/xp no doubt, but on a mini tablet? Sad to say, it's neither here nor there.

Yes, but to call Windows 8 untested is like calling Mountain Lion untested. Sure, it's new, but it's not like it's a completely new OS. I just like to point out hyperbole when I see it...

I'm more curious about what makes it the most advanced operating system in the world. It's a 10 year old product with a little sheen here and there.

Did you forget the sarcasm symbol at the end? Seriously?

Maybe for some of the same reason OSX is?

One of the reasons for me to switch from a Win 7 laptop to a MBA was the absolute update fatigue from Win 7 and associated programs.

My Win 7 laptop needed updates 1-2 times weekly and that gets old. Windows Surface will likely be a whirlwind of updates.

90% of business run windows mainly because of decision in the past that impacted their infrastructure and because Microsoft gave them incentive ($$$) to stay with them.

The trend in the industry is now to move away from windows based pc to cloud computing via virtualization on small appliance type terminal. The backend of those aren't necessary microsoft based. Plenty of government are also dropping the microsoft tax and going to other infrastructure, even on the desktop.

Ummmmm, ok.

See when I say "trend"? This mean that times are changing. The fact that Microsoft had it good in the past isn't a certainty that they'll be the king of the hill in the future. Quite a number of major business, if not the majority, are still running XP and haven't moved on to windows 7. Do you think they'll embrace Windows 8? They are also trying to rationalize their IT cost. This they can achieve by moving away from single seat licences and desktop PC, and they are doing it. Open source solution is also being adopted or at least investigated by government who want to reduce IT $$$ waste.

How long as it been since you assisted to a high level IT infrastructure meeting in a major company? Me, it was last week...

Macbook Air. For one, it actually exists. The Surface (pro model) won't ship until very late 2012 or early 2013.

The past as in MAy 2012?

Ok, here's a trend for you.

Ummmm, ok. And this means what exactly? To me it means your company is not part of the "trend"...

LOL

When's the last time you fought off three bears in the Yukon while saving a baby and one-arming a supermodel? Me, it is right now.

Yes, I'm rather tired of ms constantly downloading updates and patches "just to keep my pc at optimum performance" when I see more and more entries in my list of installed updates.

One might think ms is conscientiously doing a good job of issuing updates, but too often seeing that exclamation shield is too much. The update descriptions are often generic, makes one wonder are they creating ten new security flaws as a result of curing one malicious problem.

Does OSX updates happen that often?

Just found out I will need to take a few courses for work. Looks like 2012 MBA for me.

Probably going to grab one of these as a upgrade for my iPad 3 once the reviews are in.

Say what you will about ms but their tight integration of Xbox, windows phone, and windows 8/rt is truly the future. They are leapfrogging apple right now. The only question is if they can pull it of with anything close to the polish of Cupertino.

I have $7,000 in apple products at my house, and am a complete brand loyalist, but as far as the tablet realm more computerlike capability is what I am pining for, and on paper this trumps the artificial limitations of the iPad. with the pro's ivy bridge processor, a

Being ms they will probably blow it with some huge caveat, but this is really going to spur some serious innovation in the next few years.

No better time to be a geek with disposable income then right now.

see i feel like that just puts them on the radar with apple. Being able to sync my mac, phone, and apple tv has been a possibility and works much better with apple products

Yeah, Microsoft has a looooooong way to go to provide the seamless experience Apple does. Say what you will, but the way the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Macs play with each other is just too cool for words.

you won't be able to type on your lap

Yes, the surface is cool, but keep in mind that in the way that it's designed you won't be able to type on it unless you have a flat surface (no pun intended) to rest the thing on. Moreover, the kickstand only stands the tablet up in viewing mode (whereas most iPad cases let you rest the tablet in a flatter typing mode as well).

One of the reasons I enjoy my air separately from my iMac or iPad is because I can rest in my bed, on a couch, in a chair, and type away and get real work done. This can't happen on the Surface, and I'd recommend getting the iPad if you're going the Tablet route, if anything for the blissful integration between it and the rest of your devices.

the surface looks like it could be a superb product, but it's really too early to tell.

Ask me again in six months. Meantime, if I had to buy now, it'd be an air...

Well I feel sorry for your company. When internet goes out - and it will - they will be dead in the water. **** happens and networks go down, putting your apples in the cloud for some things is OK but dont put everything there. Thin clients only work for a critical service if the server is local.

Hell, Ive even had the phone company out fixing a voice issue and they ran their truck into a line and cut data at a location.

My mom destroyed her Mbp so I am giving her my 2010 MBA. I was all set to purchase a new 13 inch MBA but with the announcement of the surface I may hold off.

It is too soon to tell but windows 8 is really shaping up to be a true rival to osx. I will always have one osx product but it may be time to trade in my iPad and MBA for something new. There is still no rival for my 27 inch iMac.

Eagerly awaiting playing with one and getting final pricing.

Surface is still not as good as Macbook Airs. Macbooks are famous for their reliability. However, from the videos of the Surface Launch Event, Surface tend to be very unreliable. A presenter even had to switch devices during the event. Moreover, the Surface does look that good too. For full functionality and fluidity, or user experience, get a MBA.
