If that’s the case, Apple should use FHD displays without a yield-decreasing notch cut. And include a conventional USB-C charger instead of MagSafe.

The vast majority of PCs are shipping with 256GB drives which consist of at least two 128GB NAND chips. A single 256GB chip is cheaper and anyone can check component prices (e.g. Mouser).
MagSafe chargers are USB-C with a USB-C to MagSafe cable.

"While benchmarks of the 256GB SSD may show a difference compared to the previous generation, the performance of these M2 based systems for real world activities are even faster"

...unless you only have 8GB RAM and swap starts getting used, in which case the SSD is going to dramatically hammer performance vs the previous generation

This is not even a debate -- that's objectively true

It's not a benchmark thing on a given task, but the real world facts of how these systems work and is actually far more relevant for a typical user than any specific task benchmarks, particularly for folks who tend to buy base models.

i.e. loaded up browser tabs and a couple apps researching wedding reception ideas or doing a school paper...(swap getting used)...why are things slowing to a crawl on my $1200+ new M2 MBA?

yeah lol i just copy pasted what apple executive said ,was in a macrumors article few days ago ,when he reflected on 12" mba and m2 ssd's :)) kinda funny how he dares lie in people faces' like a cobra spitting his venom in your eyes and blinding you ,making you purchase the latest apple product only to realize that you've been sucked out your money ,and since we need money to live ,it basically means that nasty cobra sucked the life outta you ,but i digress

have you actually a mba m2 ? is it truly as bad as u wrote ? how many tabs have u ? chrome or safari ? how many programs ? could u show us all your open tabs with mission control ? i can keep a **** load of chrome tabs+many tabs on my mba m1 without problems

Does MaxTech realize if you keep doing this, you are not gonna get any review units or invites to Apple events? 😄
If you know them more than just this video, they catalyze Apple's marketing much more than they kill it.
I think it's good that someone tells the truth. Apple should either advertise it clearly, or should stop doing this altogether.

I agree with this yes, it is unfortunate that you can't upgrade storage or RAM without paying a hefty premium at the time of purchase.

It is one of the things I dislike about Apple, though the positives still outweigh Windows based machines for me at least.
Yea have you ever been able to self upgrade Apple without decent skills and tools? Used to be able to just open a panel and upgrade RAM and SSD in PCs, but even they are crap now with having to take the whole bottom off.

Apple really should have made 16gb RAM the default for all M2 machines.

Problems solved re: swap … and way more futureproofed machine
I.e. much much better value and offering for their customers

This looks like a great device, but the SSD situation sucks! Great vid, tho!
Yeah I would be so disappointed that exporting 4K HEVC videos in the background while I surf the web would take a little longer to finish if I bought this.

If only Apple sold other machines designed to do that process quicker for those who need it done faster.

In real world use cases, the entry level M2 Air is slower than the entry level M1 Air. Because nobody is going to buy a $1200 laptop to only open up a few tabs of web pages or documents.

It’s a shame the faster M2 SoC is held back by slower storage simply because Apple cheap out and don’t want to take a loss to its margins.

This goes back to the whole Steve Jobs’ quote on not building a cabinet or dresser with higher quality wood and then using cheap plywood for the back panel that the user never sees. Clearly Apple decided to use plywood here in an effort to save costs and drive up the average selling price.
Steve jobs was the first to ‘cheap out’ with components 😂😂 another case of using his name when one doesn’t really know what one is saying.
It is when non-geeks don't know the command. Why would users even do that when macOS supposed to be so user friendly?
The shortcut command is also written right next to the command that you click in the menu bar. It’s been the same command for decades. It’s not the same as windows but I hardly think that’s relevant. It’s certainly not complicated. No one I know, non geek or not, is unable to realise either how to, or how to find out how to quit an app on any os. You’re arguing an absolute non issue.

It's so funny seeing the fanboys defend Apple like this trillion dollar CORPORATION is their family member. ⚰️

The fact is MOST people get base model Macbooks and the new "supercharged" base model should NOT have slower speeds in any aspect than the 2 year old model, especially considering they bumped up the price by $200.

Stop sucking up to a corporation. They care about their shareholders and not you.

There's two kinds of people on these threads. There are people who say what they themselves want, and what they will do. Then there are those people who say what they think everyone else should like and do.

The point is, non-geeks don't quit apps in macOS because it's not intuitive to do so. The fact that you need a shortcut to do that is relevant. As a result, memory usage will be higher for new macOS users, especially those who choose 8/256.

It's relatively easy to force quit apps in iOS as well, but most people don't it because it's not intuitive.

If they buy a base model with only 8GB ram, it's absolutely easy for them to load it up and the swap comes into play...and that 50% slower than M1 SSD speed will be a bottleneck.

How do know it will be noticed?

macOS will write the swap before its necessary so that when you run low of memory, the memory content has already been written.

Added:

The M2 MacBook Air 256GB SSD has a sequential write speed of 2260 MB/s when writing 1GB blocks (The Verge)
The M2 MacBook Air 512GB SSD has a sequential write speed of 2760 MB/s when writing 1GB blocks (The Verge)

So writing 1GB of swap till take 0.44 seconds vs 0.36 seconds.
