I hope they learn from their mistakes and just have a sim card tray. that way, if a carrier wants to subsidise it, they can, or you can pick your own bundle. Or just ignore it completely.

i dont know if it would be possible but think it would be a really good idea if you could link your iphone to your MB and then use the 3G internet that the phone gets. You would'nt have to pay any extra, you could get internet everywhere an on a desent size screen! :D

you mean like... tethering?

Great...... you're almost there...... now just make it with a 9 inch screen.......

If that's in addition to the current model then fine - choice is good. But if you mean take away my 13" screen to replace with a 9" toy then for the love of god, no. Even the 12" screen on my work laptop is annoying. 9" would be downright painful.

This would be nice, but would probably require an AT&T data plan subscription. Mine is $60 per month.

The upside for built in 3G would be to not have to plug in the USB network adaptor anymore. AT&T's USB device doesn't even fit in the slim MBA port. I have to use a USB hub to plug into. :(

$1,499 for a MacBook Air would be a real incentive for those sitting on the fence about these things. That and it would seriously outprice the Adamo, even with a Windows License.

Wouldn't that be something...Apple beating the Adamo. :D I guess then the price-conscious AidenShaw would get an Air. :D

Hmm, another interesting and plausible suggestion. I'd really like to see this particular one happen. That, in addition to a slight speed bump with the new processors and snow leopard is all it would take for me to jump in line for one of these.

You know..... they aren't going to track you down, rip your 13" Air out of your hands, and force you to use a 9" one instead. You'll be allowed to keep it, I promise. ;)

I'm in midtown Manhattan and 3g is useless most of the time on my iphone so buying a 3g ready Macbook doesn't make much sense right now.
AT+T would have to improve it's network before I'd spend anymore $$$ on a 3g device.

This update would have been more appropriate in the first MacBook Air. They missed the boat on this one, when even some netbooks have this function already.

...and that's a reason not to add it now?

Yeah but I wouldn't be able to buy a 13" air with 3G built in. :p

Ummm our in-house techie has been doing this since last summer. PdaNet & Netshare come to mind. The speed is pretty decent.

My right half says - SO COOOL!
My left half says - WHO CARES?

Someone should first built an ever present 3G network, instead of idiotically marketing product to a large sliver of the public.

Aw, crap. This would be just the feature to make me sell my current MBA and upgrade. I don't mind using my AT&T USB modem, but it would be nice to have built-in connectivity like this. I wonder if it will just have a SIM card slot so I can use the one that I already have in my modem? That would be sweet.

Yes please and as option in all other Macbooks as well!

And make it as easy to use like on the iPhone, automatic switch from cellular to wifi and back.

AMAN! This seems a very logical next step for ALL Macbooks.

Right now I have an USB AT&T Internet external card for my MBP. Even though I love it but it does take up one of my very few USB ports.

I rather have everything built-in and save my few USB ports for something else.

Nice that the MBA is getting more love, but I agree with most about this functionality being available as an option to all the MacBook products.

The pricing is an interesting angle though. Is it lower because of an assumption of a 3G subsidization brought via the data plan subscription or is Apple finally realizing the MBA's niche needed to be grown into something more than just an Executive's expensive toy?

Where's 4g (thought it was rumored on next iphone)?

Well, it looks like my iPhone will be even slower and have more dropped calls!!!!

The 3G still sucks/doesn't exist in a lot of areas. 4G would be getting a little too far ahead of themselves for AT&T.

I would really like to have 4GB instead of 2GB. It is a marginal cost increase today - and considering the premium target group - we will use it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the $1300-1500 price is after a $200 rebate based on signing a 2 year contract for a AT&T 3G Wireless data plan for $45-60/mo. The card inside will probably be HSPA+ since the new chipsets are starting to be qualified by the carriers, so the user could eventually get speeds of 14.4Mb/s down and 5.6Mb/s up once the sufficient network upgrades are in place - initially they'd probably get 7.2/5.6.

The unsubsidized price will probably remain the same. Its not like the parts to make the MBA are getting a whole lot cheaper (Intel hasn't come out with many new Core2 processors to push prices down).

What I'm more interested in is a MBA refresh to use the new SL9600 2.13Ghz chip. Finally, decent speeds in that tiny form factor. That and bumping the RAM to 4GB DDR3.

So because they didn't offer WWAN in the first version, they should never offer it in the updated models? Interesting logic..

Funny, I heard the same thing about Apple dropping support for classic Mac OS, about switching to intel processors, about making a phone-less iPhone, etc.

iPhone = voice contract required. I don't want that.

The examples you give aren't even comparable to what you're asking for.

Do you really think Apple is stupid enough to make a product that would obliterate iPhone sales?

Making an iPod Touch with 3G would be extremely self-destructive.

Never gonna happen. Keep dreaming...........
