"Congratulations, Samsung. Keep up the great work. Apple, you've got some catching up to do."

See? this is so dumb.. so stupid.. so irrational. I'm not being a fanboy, just saying that the person that wrote this part was not being smart, as facts obviously show.

The macbook air is superior in every way besides screen (if you want matte), it is faster, has a better build quality, much better keyboard, a trackpad from another galaxy (lol), 8 gb option, 512ssd option.. same price or cheaper than the s9. And the thing runs OSX if you want too.. together with that trackpad it is awesome to interact with your computer. there's nothing like that with the s9.

And this guy has the nerve to say "Congratulations, Samsung. Keep up the great work. Apple, you've got some catching up to do." Isn't this stupid? It is.. a lot. He should be embarrassed.

everyone is entitled to their own opinion, there is nothing stupid about that , if the OP thinks the Samsung series 9 is superior to the Air, then guess what? nothing is going to change that opinion, and yes Samsung is a great company that makes great products ,they have built a great reputation over the years

Yeah. An awesome reputation for building cheap, shiny, crappy iPhone clones and losing billions of dollars for it.

Their TVs suck, too. I owned a 46" 8 series LED and it was FULL of backlight bleeding and clouding issues.

I, personally, will never even consider their substandard products.

Because it's not like the rMBP's and iPhone 5's have had any quality control issues...

Yeah, because only SOME of Samsung's phones are made of horrible, cheap and glossy plastic. You're right.

And they did not just lose more than a billion dollars for being crappy copycats.

Yeah. My bad.

What's wrong with plastic? It's far more durable than aluminium and glass.

You guys are the most immature people I have ever seen, OP is just trying to compare the 2 laptops, grow up.

Ha ha, no.

Plastic is far more durable than Glass, whoever said "Lets make the back of our phones glass!" should be fired, I dropped my iPhone 4 on a wood floor about 1/2 a metre above the ground and the back completely shattered, after a few months I got rid of my crap iPhone 4 and got a S3 and dropped it a few times on the ground both on purpose and accidently, no scratches whatsoever.

the thread title makes it seem like a fair and thorough review, not a person's opinions on areas where the samsung beats the MBA at. Thats whats pissing people off and complaining.
Heres a tip: change the title to something like "MBA vs samsung series 9: my opinions" otherwise people will expect a review, see that there isn't one, and make noise about it like an android fan.

LMFAO at your ignorance

Have you seen the S3's drop test videos? IT IS WORSE THAN THE IPHONE 4/4S AND 5.

There is nothing wrong with plastic if you treat it right.

The S3 feels like a 35 dollar cell phone, as every single Android I have held in my hands.

The Lumia 800, 900 and 920 feels like very high quality plastic.

Catch my drift?

the only thing that the samsung has over the air is a matte display (if you want one, i (plus 99% of users) do not want one).

I agree with most of your points except this one. Quite a lot more than 1% want a Matte display for our Macs. Sadly as one isn't offered we'll put up with glossy cos the other option is a windows device - which if you want to buy a Mac isn't something you're likely to do.

The MBA and the Retina MBP are a step in the right direction as they are less glossy than 13" and standard 15" MBP.

I'm sorry, but what I said is fact.

Have you seen the S3's drop test videos? IT IS WORSE THAN THE IPHONE 4/4S AND 5.

I saw around 3-4 drop test videos, on all of them, they tied, or the iPhone/S3 won because the S3/iPhone was on it's side.

Never said there was anything wrong with plastic.

The S3 feels like a 35 dollar cell phone, as every single Android I have held in my hands.

Well it is made in China, same as your iPhone.

The Lumia 800, 900 and 920 feels like very high quality plastic.

Only point I agree with.

Catch my drift?

No.

The S9 has an i7-3517U processor that runs at 2.4GHz and has 2 cores + 2 virtual cores. It is true that the max RAM is only 4GB though. But we're not discussing performance, so I fail to see how that is relevant.

It's okay op, some people can't voice their opinion without calling others stupid, see how gorillas can't express their feelings without pounding their chest.

And yes, this is a valid comparison, because I'm currently struggling abt the same thing: whether to get a MacBook Air 13'' or Samsung np900x4c.

I've been a windows user since forever so I'm concern about whether I will get use to OSX, sure I can use bootcamp but it's rather pointless to run windows on a Mac.. But what's more is that s9 got HDMI, it's 15'', and I'd prefer a matte display as its for work purposes.. btw, the ssd brand of 900x4c's is Sandisk

Apple, on the other hand, has always been credited for its high quality and virus resistibility, and Mac Air has always been in the top 3 in every notebook ranking site and review articles, not to mention samsung is rarely seen in most 'top ten's

So yea, I still can't decide at this point =_=

Just throwing out an opinion here. I think the Samsung 9 is a very pretty laptop, even beautiful. However, unless they have done a model change in the last 6 months, it was very flimsy compared to the MBA, and the trackpad was gawdawful. I have a 2010 MBA, and I would take it any day over the Series 9. I am still waiting for a machine as well put together, and I am very open to other brands.

If it helps, I bought an 11" MBA 2 years ago having always been a Windows man. I found transition pretty easy in fact and have never regretted buying the machine. It's still going strong and has only just filled up.

I stupidly dropped the MBA on the floor in a cafe a few months ago; it slightly damaged the aluminium on one corner but other than that has been fine since.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the MBA to others thinking about making the jump. The transition was much easier than I expected and using a Windows machine for work causes no problems (except wanting to use the trackpad gestures when using Windows). it's certainly great not to have seemingly constant updates (well other than Microsoft Office that is).

Good luck with your choice - whichever you end up buying.

The Sammy current price is very affordable. Yes-yes the Mac's trackpad is unrivaled but that's a +usd$400 priviledge.

Win8 (really wants a touchscreen) is the new Ultrabooks Achilles heel to me.

You sound rather immature. It's time to grow up and accept the fact that Intel's Ultrabook initiative has finally achieved some traction among PC manufacturers.

Sales continue to drop like blue ice off an airplane.. it got no traction...

----------

I got my hands on a Samsung Series 9 a few days ago, and I thought I'd pit it against my Apple MacBook Air 13" from 2010.
[/B]

Comparing the S9 to a MacAir is like comparing Oranges with Apples... totally different markets. Compare the S9 with a rMBP 13, they about the same price... and more like apples to apples...

Have a good day

You people need to get a life. The Samsung and MBA are both nice machines. Get whichever one you want and be happy.

IMO, OS X is no better or worse for day to day tasks than Windows 7.

Remember, Samsung makes a lot of the desired components on the MBA (SSD, display), so calling Samsung junk is like calling the MBA junk.

I'm actually a fan of the Samsung Series 9 15". It's (1) thinner than MBA, (2) bigger screen, and (3) user-upgradable RAM and standard mSATA drive.

If it wasn't for the fact that it's trackpad is awful and I categorically don't like Windows 7 or 8, then I would definitely use it.

When it comes to the specs of a laptop, 99% of users don't even need what the machine can offer. You have millions of people out there using top of the line machines for reading email and surfing the web.

The operating system is key in any computer. While the PC world has started following the MacBook Air line of laptops, it will never come close to the quality and power of the Apple OS.

I mostly agree with this. However, the one area that Apple smokes everyone is the trackpad. That along with the OS are the two key things which keep me with Apple products.

Conclusion
Well, this is the conclusion of my rant. Like it or not, the majority of people that I run into, even diehard Mac fans, agree with my points. While I prefer OS X as my OS of choice, the excellent hardware Samsung has created makes even Windows 7 bearable to use. Congratulations, Samsung. Keep up the great work. Apple, you've got some catching up to do.

the series 9 is a fine computer...i'm not sure, however, what the point of your post is.

Didn't the Series 9 come out in the second half 2012? You're comparing it to a 2010 MBA and complaining that Apple has some catching up to do?

I know you stated that you're comparing the "design" but i still don't get it.
the screen might be better, but the rest is a wash at best. so OSx and the trackpad make the MBA the winner in my opinion.

especially since they're priced about the same.

Mate, that's the point of my post. Apple's MacBook Air design has essentially been constant since 2008. While other Macs have been refreshed and feel competitive with PC manufacturers, the Air is being outclassed in portability, design, and battery life.

This is why this post matters - without considering the internal specs, everything else is essentially identical. And it's getting old.

I've already gotten rid of my Series 9 due to WiFi problems - but I still stand by my post. The Air has gotten stale, with its huge screen bezel and unremarkable design.

If it was so unremarkable, all the ultrabooks would not have come into existence and copied its wedge design. You say the Air's design has remained constant since 2008? How about that major redesign in 2010? How about the fact that ultrabooks came out after that and have copied the Air ever since? I have not seen one ultrabook that exceeds the Air in design-- I find aluminum to be very nice and the "carbon fiber" thing is interesting, but dark and a little ugly IMO.

Well aside from a few Toshiba KIRFs, I don't see many copies anymore. Maybe because PC manufacturers realized that the Air's design might have been revolutionary when it was released, but now it's getting quite stale.

Your redesign barely qualifies as a redesign - it was mainly to accommodate a different port layout. Can you tell the difference between the two below? Maybe, but only after a few seconds of examination - which is the opposite of what a "major redesign" is supposed to accomplish.
