who cares?

i don't have a macbook air. i have several reasons for not purchasing it, but none of them have to do with the lack of an hd camera to look at myself with. maybe the screen is too thin. maybe the price point on a camera to do useless things was too high. i don't see why it matters what the reason was for not putting in an hd camera.

oh my goodness, this is such an unnecessary feature, i don't even know what to say...

AGH last refresh kept me from buying cause of the lack of backlit keyboard, this time around no HD in the FaceTime camera? seriously apple why do you get cheap? I would have imagined an option for 8gb ram even but I guess not.

I would think an HD webcam would be pretty low on the priority list.. But that's just me

We'll see if the next gen has HD cameras. If that happens, would you please join me in calling ********?

lol. the next generation could have pink fuzzy dice hanging from the display and people would still come up with theories for why they weren't green, ranging from technically impossible to prohibitively expensive. can mac users never be pleased with a product? and, in this case, could they please not push for stuff we don't need?

let's encourage the designers to do something about other stuff that really matters...

Right, because technology isn't moving forward at all, and if it's available next year it completely means it was available this year.

You forgot to mention USB 3.0, too :p

3.0? meh. it is higher up on my list of priorities than the hd porn cam the op wants, but still not a big thing.

if someone doesn't come out with a reasonably priced thunderbolt external drive soon i am going to be a bit annoyed, though. that isn't really an air problem, but it is something i find annoying with all of the products right now.

Macbook Air, WHY do they ALWAYS leave up something essential?
Just to pi$$ you off.

Seriously, if you are looking for the perfect laptop you are on a fool's errand. There is no such thing unless you build your own, and I bet even then, people like you, will still find something to complain about.

just get a iPhone 4 and the camera problem is sorted , cant be easier and Apple asumes anyway that you bought already a iPhone 4 for the purpose of HD video chatting ..normal telephone calls or even text messaging are so ancient

My sister thought long and hard before buying the Air because of the lack of backlit keyboard and almost went for a pro but she travels a lot and she wanted the Air for its weight............she finally decided to go for it about 4 or 5 weeks ago so she is not a happy bunny now that they have put the backlight in.

Personally, I don't care about an HD camera. I also fail to see the hype around a backlit keyboard. I have had my 2011 MBP now for a little over a month and have only used the backlit keyboard twice. Neither is a deal breaker for me.

Did you even read this thread?

1) iSight and FaceTime cameras are just branding names. The fact is that they are both just webcam hardware. The previous gen MBA for example was called iSight, and the latest gen is called FaceTime, but they are in fact identical webcams.

2) Apple calls the high quality webcams "FaceTime HD" because they are capable of "720p" and such, but the fact is they are still tiny sensors and are only slightly better. The webcam in your MBP might be spec'd to be similar to the FaceTime HD based on what you are saying.

Yes, I did read the thread. I was simply stating I'm surprised that the technology of the web cams hasn't between a nearly 5 year old MacBook Pro and current MacBook Air -- regardless of the display's thickness. I wasn't aware the only difference between FaceTime and iSight was the name -- but leave it to Apple to re-label identical hardware as something "new."

Again, not hating on the current webcam in my MBA, as I didn't get it for the webcam (nor would I purchase anything for it's web cam tech unless I was recording myself playing guitar on YouTube, or something. I was just expecting the quality of the picture to be at least the same as my MBP's.

HD isn't even close to necessary with the quality of FaceTime at this point. That's all apple intends for the camera now anyway.

While I do agree that the HD cam is hardly a necessity; Apple can leave out things for one reason:

People will buy it, no matter what.

Not many actually go for the best actual deal. I just go with whatever is the best deal overall. (Price, usage, and quality all equal factors). Went from Windows XP on a Dell with adobe premiere, until editing became a hassle. Then to a G4 mdd with final cut 5 and it was a joy. Then g5 with leopard and final cut 7 was the best thing ever. Then macbook pro with snow leopard and final cut x and editing became a pile of trash and the computer couldn't even handle the HD footage I use. Now switched to Lenovo quad core windows 7 with premiere CS5 and editing is awesome again.

No company is perfect, each is just out for money. That's why you can't be a "fanboy". Whether you like it or not, something is always better in certain aspects.

If you needed a computer with HD webcam, don't get the macbook air. Because there is no way anyone "needs" a macbook air for anything other than a casual computer.
