I ordered the 256 16 but cant decide if i should upgrade to 8 core GPU and 512 gb. My current 2020 Air also has 256 gb and still has 160 gb of free storage. Im using the air to code in xcode and warching some stuff on netflix. I still have a desktop pc for gaming and a external 512 gb usb 3.1 ssd for my files.
I could also just get 8gb of ram and 512 gb if storage. What do you guys think.

@toronado455 Yes but paging is slow. The new memory architecture of the m1 makes it way more responsive than normal ram. Keep in mind that you also need some space fir the gpu. I think 8gb should be enough if you run normal tasks like office, browsing sometimes some picture editing.

Stick with 16GB. External storage u can always use later.
with coding u should know how much data u produce.

Sorry for rookie question on here, new to the site. the new MBA has only 2 USB-C ports. So, if I'm plugged into a power source, then really I only have one port remaining, right? In other words, there is no power port on the back? Sorry again for novice question. Just haven't seen a pic of the back of these new machines, and first new purchase since 2012!

Correct. Just like the MB since 2015 but with one additional port;)

I just want to know if the limitation of just one monitor is real. Being able to drive 1 6k monitor (which a lot of high end pcs can't do), but not dual 1080P or 2k just seems silly.

With the 2018 model, Apple removed the MagSafe power port (requiring you to then use one of the two Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports instead), while also removing a standalone Thunderbolt 2 port and SD card slot. Pretty much guaranteeing you'd need an additional dongle to accommodate peripherals. Same situation goes for the Silicon Mac Air, though the two ports upgraded to Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C. Oh, and the ports are the same side of the Air, which can be a pain. Headphone port on the right side.

Oh, and the Air has no 'back'. 😋

This is what a computer does when it runs out of RAM. It starts using your hard drive as RAM. Back when you had a spinning disk, your computer would become dog slow (since the spinning drive is so much slower than RAM). Although the MBA SSD speeds aren't as fast as MBP SSD speeds, they're still +1GB for both read and write. So it's not gonna be super noticeable when your computer runs out of RAM.

It checks these things in order, so the latency will still be there. That doesn't seem avoidable.

I didn’t know that MacBooks can use SSD as RAM. Obviously the RAM it always be faster than SSD, now that is integrated in the SoC even more, probably. I’m really interested on how much power have this MacBook Air, because I’m looking to sell my iPad Pro (2018) and buy this one.

Virtual memory has been around a very long time. If it runs out of ram or anticipates this, it can swap pages to disk. This is an old concept. 3D renderers (rip Mental Images) also used to map files to virtual memory directly to avoid loading something then immediately writing to swap.

Another rookie question: A few days ago when I ordered a new MBA online for delivery, Apple said the delivery window would be Nov.30-Dec.5. Then today, I got back on the Apple site and instead opted for pick up and am now able to pick one up in 2 days??? Seems like bad business for such a delay just to have one delivered versus picking up.

I wonder if delivered items are not coming from "local" inventory. Hence, the delay of sorts, for deliveries...

Well, again - a mobility issue. While you may have bluetooth headphones and home speakers, you may need to plug into 'house speakers' somewhere when at work or travel. Again, removing ports only a great idea if there's an option to use the alternative. You, of course, can just (cough, cough) buy more products from Apple to accommodate those issues. Totally coincidental, I'm sure...🙄🤪

Ya, I actually agree. I still use that little round port on occasion. Just woulda been cool to add another USB port on that side too; either another USB-c or the older one.

Supply logistics for a new product at the scale of Apple are really tough. I ran into the same thing with the HomePod mini. My mail-order was due early December. I was able to order and pick up from the store the next day.

Based on a post I just saw in another thread. Can someone confirm, WILL or WON'T Citrix Workspace work with the new M1?

I believe Parallels and a Windows VM will not work. But, I was thinking that Citrix Workspace was/is slightly different.

Thanks all...
