MacBook Airport card question

My MacBook is late 2006, before the Airport cards were technically N, even though they were. I know there was talk of charging $1.99 to unlock the N capabilities, but I believe that never happened? My friend said that when you buy an Airport Extreme, it includes whatever it needs to unlock the N capabilities. But I just bought a DLink Xtreme N router and want to know if my card is working as an N or if I need to do something to unlock it. How can I tell?
