Please keep cats (or anything animal with shedding hair) away from a Macbook keyboard because the MB keyboard is the intake of the cooling fans.

If you are worried about the amount of hair in your machine, I would purchase a room air filter. Don't go vacuuming the air vents as a vacuum cleaner will create static electricity as it draws the air out of your machine and that could damage the electronics.
Yeah. My dad killed his computer that way.

dogs are perfect!!

dogs are pretty much there when you need them. you want to play- they are there- you want to walk- they are there. sure, Like Mac they may have a few kinks, but they are easily fixed.

Unlike cats (microsoft) who sometimes, can be really nice, but arent always there for you, have a habit of clawing things, hariballs- gosh those are nasty, and generally arent very friendly unless you spend lots of time and money buying new drivers and peripherals, oops i meant toys!! yea cat toys! and foods cats dont work to well.

That's kinda what I was thinking as I didn't see any other vents. But, if the laptop is closed all of the time (okay, 98%) then how can other than the smallest bits of dust get in there? I run it at home with a full keyboard, mouse and monitor so it's never opened other than to power up.

Hmmmmmmm.

As to the dog/cat debate: Yes, large dogs are the only real ones. The rest are just snake food. And cat's aren't clean. They are actually just covered in cat spit :) Either way, I wouldn't trade either of mine!

Our local Apple store said that ANY mess under the keyboard (food, dirt, hair, etc.) will void the warranty for the keyboard. I subsequently bought an iSkin for my MBP. In this case (my wife's mid-2007 MBP), a couple of keys had come loose. The Geniuses used an air gun intending to show me that misc. particles and gunk under the keyboard had caused the issue and that I would have to pay for the repair ($180). When very little came out and I gave them a "you gotta be kidding" look, they replaced the keyboard under warranty "this time."

Glad you were able to get yours repaired under warranty. I'm curious though, if the intake for the MacBook is the keyboard, doesn't covering it with plastic make it overheat?

I have this issue is that they keep this "We are being nice to you attitude" which pushes sales, and the response most of the time is "They are really nice!"

Well think they are just trained to do it. It's easy; pretend the action is costing them something and say it was chargeable; persuade the customer to the get the repair done; if the operation is small and the customer pushes to have it done cheaper/free agree in order to appear nice and reduce turnover; next time: charge extravagant prices for accessories.

Why do I think this? Well I bought AppleCare 3 months ago. I obviously knew I couldn't return it anymore, especially with no receipt. Instead of getting refund, I told them I wanted store credit (which would mean I the money would go back to them); not only did I get store credit, no restocking was charged, and they even gave me back the full price of the product plus tax when I paid a discount for it! What company does this? Yes I stood there for 20 minutes and maybe it was that, but they did keep me as a customer; I ended up for a Time Capsule and then a Mac Mini.

I wasn't at the store with Zeos, but just taking her/his comments at face value, what a ridiculous situation! You should take reasonable precautions, but unless they hermetically seal the keyboard, it isn't reasonable to assume that there will be no dust in there (although, then again, I've never had keys work improperly on a keyboard because of dust). And I would certainly consider using an iSkin to be above and beyond the call of reasonable precaution.

I have an iSkin and a Speck case, and my MBP still runs pretty cool. But I don't really push the processor all that hard to begin with...

Once i left my mac open and my cat slept on it and guess what i had to clean the keyboard from inside to outside completely.

Compressed air canisters and painters masks to prevent inhaling the hair/dander.

And, if the problem becomes too serious to the point where you have to get your felines away from the computer, just have your feline-ware app handy. A click of a button and it plays a loud noise that sends Tom scurrying away.
