dont use up your batteries on the plane

One thing that peeves me is that you now have to remove a cover to access the battery. While this may be aesthetically pleasing and not much of an issue when at home or in the office, I travel on airplanes often. Unfortunately in coach for long flights (6+ hours).

buy from apple a power cord that plugs into an airplane seat armrest

retrofit to matte glass possible?

I am in the exact same predicament. My 12" powerbook is going on 3.5 years, and I was going to wait until this coming summer to update it. HOWEVER, I do not want to be stuck with the new macbook pro in its current form after seeing it in the store. So do I buy the old high end 15" for $1600 with the educational discount (which is a fantastic deal), or wait and see if apple listens and offers what we want in the new generation? I don't *need* a new laptop yet, but will within the next year.

can new owners tell if it will be possible to replace glossy with matte later?

i know that polarizing lenses come in light gray but not clear, so it's a workaround if you're outside starbucks but not in a video conference call.:cool:

Honestly, I can focus on the game and not the people. I give credit to the glossy screens on the old Game Boys with no back light for this ability.

Plus in real life, not a photo, your eyes don't see it this way. The camera position and the depth of field can enhance the reflection.

Where as your eyes have the ability to discriminate and see what you are focusing on.

Maybe your eyes / optical processing work that way but I, and many others, get focused on the sharp reflections - in real life. OTOH - I can block out the softer blur from a matte screen - minimal distraction.

I really believe that different people process this issue differently.

1- 17" macBook yes, for now until revision
2- Yes
3- Yes for now (remember it is LED display).

Thanks for the response but I think you are off a bit, lol. I found the answers to my own questions a while after I posted:

1) Yes, & yes. (They really should have changed the MacBook Air's track pad to the new buttonless one, now we have to wait for another revision of the Air to get that??? Bad move Apple, you could have changed it to the new one very easily!)
2) Not down
3) Not sure, you say yes???
4) No, you can still buy all three of the old cinema displays too including the old 23" for the same price of the much better new 24" lol

How is the new one "much better?" If anything it's worse as it is a glossy screen (fine on portables and consumer desktops) and glossy is not useful for color correctness, which is key for media professionals and enthusiasts. The only advantage that the new one has is the magsafe connector.

PS: The new connector is so new it's practically proprietary; so how is that a plus since it's basically the same as what it replaces, but smaller?

I think I've just given up on Apple displays.. I have a very nice 20-inch Cinema Display going 4+ years ... The new 24-inch looks fine and the added webcam is a bonus, but since I don't want a glossy screen I will shop elsewhere for a replacement. Eizo will be a good bet. Their office displays are much cheaper, and they have a whole range of professional displays, which are adjustable in height as well!! Something my Cinema Display is not...

The glossy screen is not a problem for most pros, just some. Plus glossy doesn't interfere with color correctness, both glossy and matte have the same color space and are identical lcd panels.

The new MBP is better is the following ways.
1) Faster graphics.
2) Faster memory.
3) Better power saving, and integrated GPU for additional battery time.
4) Removable HDD.
5) Support for SSD and ability to easily change to SSD when prices drop.
6) Hardware encoding / decoding of H.264 video.
7) Stiffer casing with less flex and more protection of interior electronics.
8) Faster Front side bus.
9) Stiffer improved keyboard.
10) More multi-gesture support and larger track pad.
11) More up-to-date styling to match rest of product line.
12) Battery meter moved to side of case where it is more visible.
130 better thermal characteristics, runs cooler.

Quite a few improvements I would say and pricing stayed the same. Only downside is lack of option for matte display. However this is not a big deal for most users, just a vocal few.

How does the GPU switching work in Boot Camp?

Sure would be nice if you could have the 9600M run the graphics while the 9400M handles PhysX, but apparently it doesn't work that way.

As you can conclude by Apple decisions, although some people like yourself like the matte, most people like the shiny bright gloss, I also love that they FINALLY added an iSight, mic, and speakers, all in a sweet design and LED with magsafe, so I consider that much better, you may not, but I and probably lots of others do.

I think that it would be great if they offered a matte or glossy option for people like yourself like they use to on the MacBook Pro but what can you do?

ummm since when were we talking about the Macbook Pro?

Trackpad is amazing!

Went to the Apple store the other day to have a look and it was about I never noticed that the button was gone!

It was go natural. The way you can configure corners to act as right mouse button etc was also really cool!

I use expose all the time at home but I normally have a hot corner to activate it. Using the four finger gestures is so much better!

I was expecting the trackpad to be more erm glass like but it looks just like the old pads.
