I've been trying to troubleshoot a similar macbook coreduo 1.83ghz for a while now.
Brand new working battery.
Brand new working magsafe.

replaced the magsafe board, no dice.
Next might try the battery connector where the battery bay is.

if not its probably a logicboard issue.

Battery Not Charging...

Just started having this problem today. I've carried my power adapter around since I bought this machine in March 2008. I always wrap the cord around the hinged tabs on the adapter block. I used to keep my mac in a sleeve and then would put it in the shoulder bag I have, but have stopped doing that (lost the sleeve). So when this problem occurred today, I checked web and found an interesting site (I can't find the URL right now) that suggested cleaning the contacts. 'Made sense, so I took a Q-tip, pulled off a bunch of the cotton on the ends, and doused it in a bit of contact cleaner. I also played around with the pins inside the plug end. They recess upon pressure and I read that sometimes they can get stuck in the down position.

So I've had the problem twice today and was able to relieve it through cleaning and manipulation (the first time), and then manipulation of pins the second time.

Could just be a correlation thing...but we'll see. It was easy enough to do.

Similar problem

I was watching a movie on my Macbook Pro today, while not being connected to the magsafe charger. This was fine as when the movie was over, the battery still had roughly 3/4 of its life remaining (as the MBP was originally plugged in but i had plugged it out with an hour or so remaining of the movie). I then closed my MPC and put it to sleep. An hour later i reopened it to notice that it wouldn't turn on. I eventually turned it on but noticed the dreaded "X" on the battery icon. I ran a couple of tests inculding the PRAM and the SMC, but to no avail. I then left my MPC charging for 3-4 hours, and upon my return, the X has gone, but the "battery is not charging". The magsafe adapter shows a green light and my iStat pro widget says it is fully charged.

Anybody got any ideas or has this happened to anyone?

Backtrack on my above comment..

In relation to my above comment, the following information is available about my battery:

Battery Information:

Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 0
Fully charged: No
Charging: No
Full charge capacity (mAh): 0
Health Information:
Cycle count: 0
Condition: Normal
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 0

My MPC model is the 2010 model (only 4 months old) with Mac OS X (10.6.5), 4GB, 2.4 GHz.

Hope this could help.

PRAM has nothing to do with batteries, power or charging, so that won't help. Resetting SMC does. From your readings, it looks like your battery is either not fully connected, or defective, since it doesn't appear to be fully recognized (no full charge capacity info or cycle info, etc.) You might do well to take it to a Genius bar.

plugged in but 'not charging'

I have a brand new MBA-- Dec 2010. (So it's still under warranty, fortunately.) I have the L-shaped mag adapter.

I didn't spill anything.

I didn't drain the battery--it was at 34% when I plugged it back in.

I have it plugged in the same way I've plugged it in since I bought it and suddenly it's not charging. I've read all the forums and this is the only thread that seems remotely relevant.

I've tried all the obvious things--plugged and unplugged each piece of the power line, restarted, etc.

What a pain if I have to get a new adapter already? And now I totally don't trust them.

Anything else it could be?

Do like the post above says and reset your SMC. You can find instruction on how to do so right on the apple website. It usually tends to fix battery issues such as this. I had to do it once and it worked for me. If that doesn't work for you, then you'll need to take it to the genius bar most likely.

I fixed mine this way...

I cleaned the contacts on both the mag safe power adapter and the female connect. The pins on the adapter head sometimes, if clogged or dirty, get stuck into positions that lead to poor or no contact with computer itself.

I used a contact cleaner and a stripped q-tip end.

No problems since, so it's worth a try.

good fix

If it helps any one, I had the same problem with my MB not charging so I took it to get a quote from the Apple store, I was sure it was the logic board but I took it anyway they replaced the megasafe adapter. Like I said I was sure the megasafe worked fine but I was wrong it works fine my computer charges again, they also replaced the casing in my computer that was broken for free.

Call Apple

My girlfriend's macbook (2.4ghz intel core duo) was working fine a few days ago. She said she had it plugged in to charge the battery overnight, but failed to do so. Now she has to have it plugged in for it to work (and if the magsafe adapter is accidentally knocked off, the computer shuts down right away.) From what she noticed, it didn't have a gradual decline in battery performance (battery not holding charge as long, etc.)

Luckily, she still had a few months left on her AppleCare, so I called in with the hopes of sending in the computer since it might be an internal rather than a battery issue. Apple support walked me through the system profiler and the guy asked if it stated "battery installed- yes or no (which it said yes)," how many cycle counts (over 200) and how much charge remained (zero) on the battery. They diagnosed it was a battery issue rather than an internal one. At this point, I thought I had to buy a new battery since I know batteries weren't covered in the warranty, BUT--- the battery had known issues. Apple offered to send me a new one, and all they asked in return was send the old one back!!!

The lesson of the story- it is worth a shot to call them and see if there is a sort-of recall on the battery, even if your computer is not under warranty anymore. FYI- batteries aren't covered under warranty.

My girlfriend is happy. She can use her beloved Macbook without having to be continuously plugged.

Good luck, guys.

Fix to Macbook not charging

After not using my macbook for several weeks, I logged in today. The last time that I had used the laptop my battery was completely drained to 0%. When I connected to my ac power adapter, the macbook would not charge. I consulted macbook support online and found the following steps that would work to fix this problem.

1. Power down the computer (completely shut off) and plug ac adapter into power source if not already connected.
2. Hold down left shift, control, and option keys while also pressing down on the power button at the same time.
3. Release all buttons at the same time.
4. Press power button again to turn computer back on.

My computer began charging instantly after doing this; however, it did take a few minutes for my percentages of battery power to change.

Hope this helps!

This may work for your MagSafe

Take out the duck head or extension cord from the Magsafe unit. "Short circuit" the two prongs on the unit (NOT THE CORD OR DUCK HEAD THAT PLUGS IN TO THE OUTLET) with a metal object or wire (I used my door key).

This is a solution I found in the internet for my cyclocomputer that suddenly stopped working. Now both my cyclocomputer and magsafe are working fine.

Frayed or damaged cords are another story, though.

I hope this helps out.
