MacBook: Buy Now or wait for new chip?

Merom will likely to be in the Macbook as soon as MBP - other companies have already brought out small Merom laptops today - the mere desire to differentiate between MB and MBP's would probably be a lossed gamble given how well MB sales have been, and how Apple is sure to want to keep it that way (and hence have the latest CPU in them).

Exactly. I dont think either PC or Mac side is viewing 64bit as some sort of seperate tier. they want to make it a straight up replacement to their current line to get everone going 64 so the macbook can very well be updated at the same time as the MBP.

Also, good point about the sales. Now that the switch has been made, i really don't think specs like speed have any factor in the consumer mind when they make a purchase. They go MB rather than MBP due to price and form factor. So I don't think this is one matter in which they'll extort money out of their customers. Thats what selling it in black is for.
 
I still wait - but not so much for the Merom per se. The MBP is supposed to be the top of the Apple notebook line but is looking less so as time goes on. Many of the features we are interested in have been in the "lower end" MacBook for some time: magnetic latch, hard drive access. More than enough time has passed for Apple engineering to sort through the various problems and have fixes ready to go in this next version: flawed MagSafe cord design, case integrity over the optical design, cooling system, keyboard issues, etc.

The current MBP is overdue a refresh / revision - Merom will be nice but the other engineering issues are as important to me - I still wait.
 
Timing

My predicament, is that the Educational bundle with the $179 rebate for an Ipod nano ends September 16, my Fall semester already started and i need my MB. I would feel pretty dumb if i bought my computer this weekend and have a new chipset come out the next. Should i wait a couple of more weeks???? Sorry for the bugging.

I ordered my black MacBook last week. Sure Merom is coming, but 64-bit really isn't important enough to me to warrant waiting any longer when I need my laptop. Sure it would be nice, but most people won't see a dramatic increase in day to day usage. The current Yonah books are still going to be a damn good computer in a few years. People are functioning perfectly well with PowerPC notebooks still - it's not a huge deal. I say buy now.

I decided that since it should be coming out rather soon.

That I would wait to see what the heat issue is going to be with the CPU's.

If its hotter I am sure that I might be able to get a refurbished 1.8 MacBook.

Also am curious if the new MBP will have the new design items that are on the MB.

Think that I will hold off just a bit more!

I'm in the same situation as alot of people here. I don't know if i should wait for an upgrade to the MB or if i should just go buy one today and get the student discount.

Doesn't Apple have a 30 day exchange policy?
