HomePod MacBook can't "see" HomePods when connected to VPN, but iPhone can

I frequently use VPNs on both my iPhone and my MacBook. When connected to the VPN, my iPhone can AirPlay to my HomePods without any difficultly. However, when my MacBook in connected to the same VPN, the HomePods disappear from the available audio sources.

Is it possible to get my MacBook to see the HomePods while on the VPN?

Which VPN and do you have a setting to "stay invisible on local network"? I don't have any HomePods but that is my best guess.
