Recently files from my macbook have been vanishing from both my hard drive and my external time machine drive. Now over 3/4 of my music and all of my documents are gone from both drives.

Is there a way to reset everything on the macbook to like it was when I just bought it? Even when I reformat it seems some settings carry over and I want everything to be new when I give this thing its last shot.

I have the newest macbook pro 17 inch and its running snow leopard. I just want to know how to reset everything to the default and then reformat. It seems that it keeps some hardware settings and stuff even though i erase the hard drive
