Macbook doesn't read/burn DVD-Rs

My MB just started to not burn/Read DVD-Rs. I took it apart and buffed the lens to no avail. Short of buying a $199 replacement drive is there anything I can do?

Yeah, and commercially pressed DVDs

If under warranty or you have AppleCare, your drive will be replaced free (though after the disassembly and such you did that option may not be honored in this case).

I have had three client's Macbooks replaced under warranty because of similar problems and it was no hassle at all.
