Macbook doesn't recognize 10.4.9 Combo update?!

Oh boy, so here goes: I downloaded the 10.4.9 combo update from Apple for my dad's G4 Macbook. He opened the installer and left for a few hours, my mom came home and restarted the computer, and now my dad is getting nothing but a circle with a slash through it when he tries to boot up the Macbook.😕 He's tried restarting several times and is not having any luck. He had already installed the 10.4.9 update successfully, but not the combo update, which is exactly how I did my mini. What now?😱

Ok, ok, so I'll put in the tiger disk and start from there... I was hoping I wouldn't end up with a useless sytem folder on his hdd. I guess the moral of this story is "don't let your folks install their own software updates!"😛
