MacBook eject-a-cd noise when waking from sleep

My friend has a Dell Studio 15 with a slot-loading drive. It doesn't make that sound. Just sayin'... 😉

You sure it's waking from sleep? I know people who have brand new Dell XPS and they make the exact same sound.

Quick Fix!

Put a blank cd or a "disk shaped" piece of plastic in the drive..ive noticed that when i have a cd in the drive and i open my macbook it doesnt make a noise!

Yah...i recently found out that if you use parallels to boot another os such as windows 7 ultimate 64 bit like myself 😀, it makes the same noise, and it gets really annoying during class when im starting up to play halo...or cod mw2

If u disable win7's ability to use the CD drive, it won't make that sound.

Also, apple released an EFI update to newer MacBooks to disable that on wake!

You would need to open up your Macbook and disconnect the power to the optical drive

In slim-line slot-loader, there is no separate data and power connector; there's only one connector!!!! Some devices have a master and slave switch but in most cases it's omitted.

Now from my experience, the newer machines that take the ultra-slim 9mm tall slot-loaders will make slightly more noise compared to the laptop/mini's with the standard 12mm drives... it's not actually more noise, just those components are smaller and the sound they make are at a higher pitch.

The computer runs a check to make sure that there's nothing in the drive when you wake it up from sleep or turn it on. It's normal, don't worry.

I did not know this.
But yes, it is normal.

ALL laptops with slot-loading drives make that noise, not just Apple. I'm sure there's a good technical reason for the noise (it has to check and suck in any disc that you might have inserted while the computer was sleeping?) You can bet the Apple engineers hate that sound as well and would get rid of it if they could.

I am assuming removing the sound was intentional and not a mistake?
