Macbook flashing file icon on startup!!! please help

My friend has a macbook.

The other day she turned it on and now instead of booting up all she gets is a flashing file icon.

I have tried to use the install dvd and then use disk utility but it doesn't see the macbook's HD so i cannot run a disk repair or anything.

Please can someone help me out with some suggestions?

Am I going to need to replace the HD?

If so were does one buy them from in the UK?

Please help if you can... she is also really worried she is going to loose the data on the drive!!!
