There's a basic Macbook that is on sale for $649. With the keynote and all, I am not sure whether I should hold out on a new purchase, but $649 seems like a great price even for the most basic version of Macbook.

Do I wait, or is $649 a good deal for Macbook 1.83ghz version? I don't do any hardcore stuff on my portable units, just some WoW and basic stuff and my PB G4 is still working well for me.

The latest Core 2 Duo version or what? $649 in an AMAZING deal considering even the educational price for the basic MacBook is $1049. Take it take it! Unless the upgrade wouldn't be worth it over your PBG4, I don't know how much of a speed increase you'd see.

That is the full description from my school bookstore. Am I missing something here?

Keep in mind that this is a Rev. A MacBook and so it's Core Duo processor, not the new Core 2 Duo. ;)

Saved by the forum once again......ty for your input and saving me a trip to the bookstore and a big disappointment to follow.:D

Yea is not the "all new" Core 2 duo, so for my super ultra intensive work this machine is useless.
Sorry but that is a very stupid way of thinking. This machine is an excelent and powerful computer, just pump ram and do whatever you want with it.
Just my 2 cents

I think this is a great deal, who knows, you may get 1GB RAM and 80GB HD.

But, I have a feeling they be lowering the price to make room for C2D refurb'd Macbooks. If you can wait, wait. If not, buy it cause its a steal.

Look at what the G4 iBooks are going for refurb'd. $799 is the bottom of the line for Apple notebooks, I think. C2Ds will probably go up at the slightly cheaper $999 price....

How much do they happen to be selling the 2ghz ones for? :D

Don't you have 5 Macs already? I guess 5 isn't enough huh :p

I just checked, no more 1.83Ghz...only 2.0Ghz White ($899) and Black ($999)

Wow, an iBook is still going for $999 while you can get a Blackbook for the same price. Apple should lower the price of the iBook by $150-200 if they want to get rid of it.

I buy and sell periodically, and if it can be had for cheap then all the more merrier when it comes to selling ;)

That is certainly a good price though, if I see such a price around I'd walk up to the cash register and ask for every one of those :D

Perfectly understandable and good idea!

649 is such a good deal before I clicked the link to this thread I went immediately to apples refurb site, thinking they had lowered them again. But alas, they weren't.

Buy it, who cares if it isn't C2Duo, put some ram in it and call it good.

Thx for all your thoughtful advice on this issue. I guess I might go pick it up tomorrow. My wife always takes my PBG4.....I guess I could give her this thing and then buy myself the next Macbook version that gets released without guilt.

That's still ~$150 less than what Apple wants for it... I'd buy it!

i, too, would buy it. even if it only has 512mb ram. and even if it only has a combo drive. and even if it's not a core 2 duo. but really, i'm serious. i really would buy it. good to take notes with in class, surf the web, listen to music.

Buy now, while still can, ask questions later. If Leopard comes out shortly, should get upgrade free. Otherwise, keep it until Leopard comes out, sell then, buy another with Leopard. Should not lose any money at all and have fun notebook until then.

I agree with them^, BUY!!

that is an awesome price, ignore the people who talk about core 2 duo as if it is such a great processor increase, it is so close for most tasks you wouldn't notice a difference (at least not a several hundred dollar one). If nothing else you could just sell it for a good deal more than you bought it for online.
