If Leopard comes out shortly, should get upgrade free.
No. Leopard won't be out for months, and Apple generally doesn't provide free upgrades unless you buy after it's announced.

There's likely no link as it's already been mentioned as a campus store deal. I have no reason to doubt this, as I recently saw the same thing for $699 on an employee purchase link here (my company has a deal with Apple to allow a discounted prices, as do many companies).

If you can get it for $649, that's a killer deal. Period. Bump the RAM to 1GB, or even better 2GB, and it'll be a great little system. My lessor-spec'd old mini core duo w/1GB works very well, and comparably to my MBP in most everyday cases.

is there any chance I can buy it?

it's much cheaper than the mini i'm thinking about and probably twice as fast as my pb g4.

Sorry about neglecting this thread.

There is no link to this deal. If you live in Fargo, ND for some reason like myself, walk over the the NDSU campus and you can pick this up. I personally didn't take the deal because I wasn't really sure about price drops on other current models.

Wow this is nuts.

When the 2.0ghz machines are selling for $799 on the govt store I snapped up 2 without thinking and one of them is already sold on eBay.

And here you are... complaining about price drops and crap. It is very unlikely that you can get a new MB at this price any time in the future. It is very unlikely that you can get a moderately used one for the price either. That price is that good.

At less than the price of a Mac Mini it really leaves one very little grounds to complain about anything.

Damn iW00t.......SOLD......what you said just changed my mind on this subject.

I have been out of Mac market since I bought my PBG4 so I guess I really didn't see the value right away. But if all you guys are saying this, it must be right because you guys are up to date on these things.

Sending my wife right away and ty in advance :D

Like I said, I just sold my PBG4 for $900 (and I only paid $950 for it a year ago). If I could get a MB for $649 I would snap it up right now and pocket the difference.

How much more powerful is this particular Macbook compared to 1.33ghz 12"PBG4?

I used to have that PB, and now I own the MB you're buying.

I am EXTREMELY happy with my new MB, no looking back. The 12" PB was very adequate for most of my usage, but I would find it kinda laggy with some stuff like occasional Firefox stuttering, etc. What you're getting with the MB is not just the dual CPU (EACH of which is more powerful than the 1.25GHz G4), but a lot of new features- higher-res widescreen, glossy screen (which I prefer), iSight, Magsafe power cord, Remote with FrontRow, etc. Another nice plus is that the MB hard drive is easily upgradable.

Keep in mind that Rosetta is used for some apps so you'll likely want to bump the RAM (but Office is fine on my MB), and the MB has inferior graphics card for games (otherwise I don't think it should matter.) I also like the magnetic latch on the MB, it feels more durable to me.

By the time Universal versions of Office and Photoshop come out (not too long now), there will be no contest in terms of power.

But add it all up, and the MB is a no-brainer for me. Used 12" PowerBooks sell on EBay for around that price, and you're getting a new unit with warranty that can be extended later with Applecare.

I really appreciate your in-depth comparison madmaxmedia. I think I might buy two now....one for my wife and one for myself. I don't use anything heavy on portable units anyway so this should be perfect for me to lug around work as PB replacement, and to keep my wife off of my Macbook and her hate for Mac OS :( (I will probably install Windows onto her unit)

We are getting up early tomorrow and going to the bookstore when it opens....thank god that financial aid checks are not in until next week for other students :D
