Hi, first post for me and I am so thankful for this website.... I love my Mac but I do not know the serious tech stuff like right now!
I have a late '08 model MacBook updated to Mountain Lion. The hardrive icon on my desktop was accidentally selected while I was wiping down the keyboard just now and I immediately noticed a small white window that popped up saying it was modified... the curser thing kept spinning and I could not stop it so I manually shut the computer off and removed the battery for a few minutes. After turning back on, it now displays a "/" icon underneath and a tiny green light is illuminated on the icon. It also looks the same in Finder. What have I done?????? I'm freaking out!

Sounds like you just renamed the hard drive. Simply go to your desktop and select it and rename it back to "Macintosh HD". Then fire up Disk Utility, repair permissions, and let it roll.
