try holding down T on the macbook to start it up in target disk mode.

Awesome, that worked! but, my computer now says that the drive inserted, does not contain a volume that Mac OS X can read. is there any way to fix that, without erasing the drive? the point, is to retrieve data from the drive, before trying to re-install software, or just have Apple replace the hard drive. but the data on there would really like to get. any way.... ?!?

thanks!

you should take it to an apple store if you can. if your volume can't be read by another mac, it's likely that your hard drive has crashed.

there are services who can help you recover data from a bad drive, and you local apple store might be able to recommend some places.

best of luck!
