Most frustratingly this feature DOES NOT WORK on battery. As soon as you close the lid, the computer sleeps. You wake it up, hoorah, it goes to native monitor resoluation so you are not forced to run at the Macbook 1280x800 resolution. With dock.

That joy lasts about 2 seconds as the macbook goes back to sleep. And again and again and again.

Morons, apple. Morons.

Just get InsomniaX and it won't go to sleep when you close the lid.

I can see why apple made it the way it is, because if it were possible(by default) for it to be running on battery while the lid was closed, that could drain your battery pretty fast if you think it's off since the lid is down.

Does anyone know of another way to activate clamshell mode?

Every time you close the laptop and click a button, the hard drive spins down then spins back up again. I find this useless and unneeded wear and tear on the hard drive for nothing.

There must be a shortcut or something no?

While I'm on the subject of displays, does anybody know of a rotate 90 degree external display shortcut as well? lol

In Displays in System Preferences click "Show displays in menu bar"
You can get to it quickly then, up in the menu bar.

As for a keyboard shortcut, no, but I wouldn't mind having one.

Macbook question

hey,

Is there a way to stay connected to the internet, after you flip the screen shut (i.e how do i avoid the laptop shutting down in that event).

thanks

Ok I find in clamshell mode, I put 4 tiny plastic caps on the feet of my MBP, This raises it about a cm off the ground and keeps it INCREDIBLY cool, even cooler than when I have the screen open flat on my desk. It's idling at about 40 degrees celcius right now, which is pretty good considering the display is closed in clamshell.

So yeah, I'll be using my MBP like this from now on at my desk.

Should Do

I have a bluetooth mouse that i thought was off, closed the lid and moved the mouse and my second monitor flicked on, definitely worked with me!

*Turn laptop on.
*Plug in keyboard, mouse, or any other peripherals
*Close lid
*I always let it fall asleep first, then wake it up with the mouse or keyboard
*It will toggle the disk drive, screen will turn on, then it will turn off with the a steady white light
*The laptop is now in clamshell mode!

I normally only use this mode for tasks that will not heat the laptop up too much. I worry any heat dissipated will mess with the LCD, but I don't know if that would really happen.

Is it possible to run Macbook pro in clamshell mode with wireless mouse and keyboard?

If you are using a BlueTooth keyboard and mouse on a Bluetooth enabled Apple portable:

Make sure the computer is plugged in to an outlet using the AC power adapter.
Verify that Bluetooth is turned on by using the Bluetooth pane of System Preferences or the Bluetooth menu icon.
Pair your Bluetooth keyboard or mouse with the computer. For step-by-step instructions, see this article for keyboard pairing or see this article for mouse pairing.
In System Preferences, be sure that the Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer option is selected.
With the computer turned on connect the Apple portable (using the appropriate Apple adapter if necessary) to the appropriate port on the external display or projector and turn the display or projector on.
Once your computer's Desktop appears on the external display, close the computer's lid.
Once it's closed, wake the computer up by either clicking your Bluetooth mouse button or by pressing a key on your Bluetooth keyboard.
You should now be able to use your Apple portable as you normally would, using your Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

internet is not working in clamshell mode!!!

Hi,
I'm new to this, so bare with me. I recently purchased a mini display-vga cord, wireless keyboard and magic mouse for my 13 inch Macbook Pro, hoping that it'll work in clamshell mode. After setting it up and closing the laptop it worked fine, but did not have internet. I opened the computer and the wifi worked again. Is there anyway I can set this up so I don't have to keep my laptop open while trying to get internet for my external display? It sort of defeats the purpose. Thanks a lot!

it's working perfectly for me at work with a huge Dell external display (can't remember model #) at a much higher resolution (again, can't remember, but I think it was the max) and doesn't really get that hot at all using a variety of programs including VMware with XP and 7 running at the same time (MBP 13")

If you want to run it without external gubbins the newest version of Insomniax works with SnowL.
