when i have my macbook on and close it (sleep mode) and re-open it at a later time. it typically makes four noises (basically sounds like it is reading the hard drive for 1-2 seconds when you open it. lately it is making those same noises but noticeably slower. what could be causing this? is my hard drive going to go out on me soon? i have about 10 GB free on it. any thoughts?

What's the HD's capacity? Generally, you want to keep >10% free for performance.
