Macbook / iTunes not recognizing my iPhone??

    I have an iPhone 5 connected to my Macbook Pro, but when I open iTunes there is no option to select the phone for synching. Under File > Devices everything is grayed out. The manual says that a "Devices" pop up menu should appear at the top of the screen -- but there is nothing.

    When I plug the phone into computer for the first time it makes the same sound that it makes when I plug it into the wall, so I know it's taking a charge. For some reason the computer doesn't recognize that the phone is connected to it. Is there something in System Preferences I need to change? I made sure I have the latest version of iTunes.

    Can a Mod move this thread to Tips, Troubleshooting please...
