I kept getting a message that I had "harmful" files and it showed that they were adware in the /private folder. I deleted the whole /private folder and now my Mac reboots after s quick reveal of a bunch of files in black and white and a lot of words at the very top that disappears so quickly that I can't read them. Anyone had this happen and how do I fix it?

It's like you had a bad valve in your heart so you removed your entire heart.

You didn't say what model Mac you have...so...reinstall macOS in this manner if you can. Don't do the erase your disk part. A regular reinstall will leave your files and settings intact.

After you do a system software reinstall, I suggest you download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware for Mac from here:
    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

It downloads as a "free version".
The free version will request that you "upgrade" to the "paid version".
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS.
After 30 days, the "requests to upgrade" will end, and it will automatically "convert itself" into a forever-free version.

Get in the habit of running it every few days.
I've had it detect a bit of adware here, and it removed it.
    Good software!
