Bite your tongue. As you know, Apple was just short of opening an India based tech support center. if you think any Japanese or Chinese manufacturer has poor understanding of the English language, just wait until you get to deal with the Indians, lol.

I had to call my ISP tech support late last night, and a very well spoken, Indian woman guided me through my troubleshoot, and was very pleasant and saved my butt.

and to the original poster...way to get your Matte on !

Matte or Glossy

The MacBook and MacBook Pros can be custom ordered from Apple (through a retailer or Apple store) with a glossy or matte screen. I'm pretty sure the option is not available in their online store. In our showroom we have a black MacBook (next to a 1.8Ghz glossy white MacBook) with a matte screen to show the difference between screen surfaces.

sorry, but this isn't true. all macbooks ship with glossy displays. only the macbook pros have the option of matte.

macbook lcd replacement: <1hr,$250 if you can solder

Actually, changing your macbook lcd isn't so bad if you don't mind soldering. I posted a howto here: http://badshinchan.blogspot.com/
I took apart a powerbook 12" following the macfixit instructions and this is much much faster. You don't have to take the whole computer apart, for instance. I did for a macbook, but I know the same method can be followed with the 12" powerbook. I suspect apple is consistent in having the display cable plug into the lcd (for ease of sourcing components) so this howto should apply to most recent mac laptops.

I have managed to take out the broken LCD without dissassembling the whole MacBook, and without cutting the inverter cables. We'll see whether I'll be able to assemble the new display or not. Pretty sure I would.

Anyway, my question is: what was the exact matte display model you used? I have an opportunity to choose between a number of different toshiba models for my MacBook, but I am not sure of their logic compatibility.

Thanks for replies.

hi everyone,

just broke my macbook screen (a bit). so i'm looking for a replacement and i found this thread.
have you found out the type of the toshiba panel? matte would be so great.
the only matte toshiba panel i could find in the net is the LTD133KX2S, all others are glossy. but will it work with the macbook???

thanks for replies!

The 100% sure replacement is LG.PHILIPS LP133WX1. You could also use Toshiba's LTD133EX2A (I have one), but you would need to make a converter for pinouts, and move the EPROM out of the old display, so MacBook recognizes it. If you need help with it, contact me.

PS. Both models are glare..

Oh just want to add in my 2 cents since some "arse" cracked my macbook (13") screen and I neverrrr found out who did it sadly.

The macbook screen could be taken out in 8 simple steps :) Without disassembling the whole case.

You could find it for other Macbook models here too:

Plus they also show you how to get the same Manufacturer parts correctly ^^
But in my own opinion, I prefer the Glossy screen for the depth and clarity but too bad they crack so easily =/

**And boo to Apple Care, not bothering to cover crack damages lol. See if I bother to get Apple Care after this x.x

I think this picture perfectly explains why glossy is better in a situation with a light in the background than matte, contrary to popular belief.

Sony arguably has the best screens on the market so I consider this an upgrade.

I've been wondering how much mass sourcing they have been doing building these macbooks with how generic they seem compared to the old PPC books that were mac only parts.

As an Electronics Engineer I have done quit a bit of tampering with my old iBooks whenever the logic board would fail I'd go in and solder the same tracer and SMT that burns off the board at the input of the Dc board to the logic board every single time and fix it for another 6 months until it burned out again.

I suspect this is by no means the end of the multi sourcing, but since the Vaio line is also a line that they are highly proud of I doubt there will be any cost savings sourcing other parts, only the advantage of changing parts to something of a similar but different nature.

Heellllpppp!!!

My 13" Macbook fell from my bag the other day and my screen broke!!! It's really the most awful sight and when I went to a store (I'm in the Philippines by the way), they told me that to replace it would cost around $950!!! (That's around P38,000 pesos!!!)

I quickly went to this forum and now I'm seriously considering doing this on my own, but don't know where to get these displays and if they ship internationally. I'm also not sure if I should do this on my own or if I should ship it to another country or something (but the freight would probably be as much!)

Please help! I'm a DIY kinda guy but have no experience with the whole soldering and putting a screen back together, but any assistance would be a big help.

Thanks!

The Easy way To Get a Matte Screen

you can really easily get a matte screen by taking cleaning chemicals and rubbing it on the screen. introducing the :apple: mattebook.

NOTE: MAY VOID WARRANTY! CONSULT WITH APPLE CARE BEFORE PREFORMING!

Well, a more realistic option might be applying an anti-glare film to the MacBook's glossy screen. I've been looking everywhere for Power Support's anti-glare film for MacBooks-- I called them, and they said that they're supposed to get a shipment around Valentine's Day. I intend to post the results of the glossy vs. matte when I get the anti-glare film.

Ha! Somebody the other night said to me that if you use sandpaper on the MacBook display, the screen will turn matte? Do you think this is remotely possible/true?

Hah, when I saw that picture I felt the exact opposite! That picture shows why matte is better in a situation with a light in the background.

The matte just has a diffuse smooth gradient of lightness to darkness. The glossy has a very bright reflection that looks like a perfect mirror! You can even see the fine details in the beautiful molding around the base of the light fixture on the ceiling!

Or different reactions to this picture shows exactly why glossy vs. matte is a personal preference and not a universal better or worse.

p.s. Congrats on the pretty moldings around the light fixture in your house! You must have some swanky digs.
