Good for Tim I guess.
I wish I shared his passion for that angle at every decision.

Number go up! Yay!

That’s capitalism man. Apple is no longer the rocket ship it was in the early 2000’s. No matter what, given their size today, they are subject to the Law of Big Numbers via Wall Street.

I do think that the rumored successor CEO will bring back a core product focus, but the company still has to operate like the behemoth that they are now 🤷‍♂️

Until a global revolution, the die is cast. Number MUST go up or the Board, pressured by Number/Wall Street will replace leadership to attempt to get Number back to an upward swing. That’s the system, unfortunately.

You can attack it all you want, but at the end of the day the customer this is for has no idea different USB-C exist. A dot won't change anything and they'll plug in their phone to charge it at the same time. This is not a device for tech people who read forums
Shoot, at this price point I’m thinking of getting one just for the living room. I am not a fan of iPads. They’re great for a lot of people, just not me. I couldn’t care less what speeds the USB ports are just to do some web browsing on a larger screen.

It comes with a 20W power adapter and cable.
in the EU, they are required to sell the power adaptor separately so that it isn't wasted shipping one to people who already have one. In the rest of the world, the power adaptor is part of the default package.

They should sell a dongle with the ports marked, and a special cloth to clean the dongle for maximum speeds. I reckon that would be about $100 on the Apple Store.

Yea, thanks eu. I bought a Bluetooth speaker that was shipped without a power adapter however it only lasted 9 months as the company said that the charging port was burnt out, probably due to the adapter! EU are a bunch of effing eejits!

Etsy shops and Amazon sellers firing up those label makers to print $10 packs of USB2 USB3 stickers.

USB 2.0 is inexcusable. That is really old technology. No Thunderbolt, ok, but USB 2???

Probably a limitation of the controller chip in the A18 Pro. It is just an iPhone chip, after all, and the iPhone only has one USB 3 port.

Hopefully if this is going to continue to be a dual-use chip going forward, they will at least add the capability to the future A-series chips, even if the iPhone doesn't take advantage of it. When Apple originally designed the A18 Pro, probably starting in 2023, the MacBook Neo was probably not a consideration.

Makes me wonder if the A19 Pro already has this capability. They may have clued the engineers into such a concept by 2024 and added that functionality. May also explain the real reason behind the vapor chamber and 12GB, to allow the 2027 MacBook Neo to do a bit more under load and have a more reasonable amount of memory, to entice more potential buyers on the fence next year.

I'm curious how much $$ this saves apple. I would have thought we're reaching the point that for manufacturing it makes more economic sense just to make them both 3.0 and not bother with doing two separate. Or perhaps like others are saying its a limitation of the A18

It 100% is a limitation of the A18 Pro. I was convinced this laptop was only gonna have 1 USB-C port and MagSafe because of the limitation. So it technically is an upgrade by giving a 2nd USB-C port instead, even if it is 2.0 speeds. But yeah if they ever want to not have this issue in the future they’ll have to start adding more controllers to their A_ Pro chips.

Is only the USB 3 port for charging? And if not will the USB 2 port charge the neo slower even when off? They should just made the same both ports but for 599 can't really complain.

Both USB-C ports can be used for charging. No $600 devices should be gimped with USB2 ports. It's 2026, not 2016.

Ya but that what they decided. Too bad. But it's still not bad. Unless you are transferring heavy files 2.0 is good enough.

The question is will the 2.0 port charge the NEO slower than the 3.0 port.

Charging speed is the same regardless of the data speed

You mean the 2.0 port supplies the same watts or charging power as the 3.0 port?
Yes, both charge the NEO at a maximum of 20w.

As far as supplying power, both ports should supply the typical low power USB power, but probably would not be good for higher power devices like another laptop.

For power, in either direction, they should be the same. Their only difference is in the data transmission rates. The A-series chip set really only has one I/O channel and that is split between the two ports. One gets 3.0 speed and the other gets the remainder. You have to get to the M-series chips to get more I/O channels. It's a compromise but one with minimal impact for users. They can charge the laptop with the slow port and connect data to the fast port.
