MacBook Neo Has Just 8GB RAM With No Upgrade Option

Apple made some compromises to sell a Mac notebook at $599, including cutting back on RAM. While all other Macs start at 16GB RAM, the MacBook Neo is equipped with 8GB RAM and no option to upgrade to more memory.

With the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro models and 8GB RAM, the MacBook Neo is able to run all Apple Intelligence features, but as AI gets more advanced and Apple adds new capabilities, there's a chance it could fall behind.

8GB RAM ensures the MacBook Neo is affordable, especially with the current memory shortages that are causing prices to soar. It's also the RAM in the iPhone 16 Pro.

Apple's MacBook Air used to have an 8GB option, but in October 2024, Apple updated it to add 16GB RAM to the entry level machine. Since then, no Mac has shipped with less than 16GB.

Though it only has 8GB RAM, the MacBook Neo is a powerful machine for everyday tasks like writing, web browsing, and schoolwork, and it's more than capable of light photo and video editing.

Pricing on the MacBook Neo starts at $599, and it is available for pre-order.

As long as you're not a serial tab abuser like me - it'll be fine for most people who just want to browse the web, write, edit a few things.

My girlfriend would have absolutely no issues using this as her main laptop.

They didn’t “cut back” on RAM. They cut back on the SoC, using the A18Pro, which only comes in 1 version: 8GB.

Had they used the A19Pro they could have had 12GB.

Not enough for a main machine, more than enough for a secondary one.
Would I like more? Absolutely. But personally, my M1 Air still runs fine on 8 GB. This thing should be fine for the main users of it.
Really wish you could do 16 GB tho.. lol

The display is 2.5k at 60Hz and the supported external display will also be limited, so it makes 8GB unified memory less of a bottleneck than it is on an MBP or a mini.

I would also assume the vast majority of external display use in EDU will be mirrored to a projector or TV for presentation purposes, likely at 2KHD resolution, so it won’t tax the memory there either.

Huge numbers of people are not power users and really only need a computer to surf the internet, stream movies, check email, and write term papers. And they want to do this on a simple and well designed OS. This fills that niche at a great price point.

My son is inelementary school and is using 3D CAD programs. Maybe he's not in the norm.

Sure the 8GB is kind of a bummer, however, that's a good sign that Apple will continue to make macOS memory optimized ( or at least try ).

This! Makes me think MacOS 27 will a more refined/optimsed OS. Fingers crossed for the next 5 years (potential support of Neo)!

I'm happily rocking an M1 iMac and M2 Air - both with 8GB. I'm just browsing and writing documents... and never think twice about memory. It's perfectly adequate for those who aren't editing movies or crunching massive audio files.
