my ibook G4 gets quite warm after a lot of intensive processor use, but never so hot that I can't use it on my lap, even for extended periods. I've owned 4 mac laptops (ibook G3 600 & 900, powerbook G4 12" 1 Ghz, ibook G4 1.33 Ghz) and none of them has ever been remotely hot enough to cause serious discomfort, let alone burn furniture.
People with these extreme temps - this is NOT normal behavior for a laptop. No part of a laptop should ever be too hot to touch with your bare hands. Don't stand for this! Take them back or demand a fix!
