I'm going on my second year studying computer science. We were told our first day that even the cheapest pc would be more than enough. You'll probably spend most of you're time in a text editor anyway. Personally, I'm buying a new unibody macbook or a refurb pro this summer - the deciding factor will be portability vs screen estate. I've had two whitebooks which both has cracked, and I'm using that as an excuse for going pro/unibody:D

I'm going into Computer Science in Canada as well next year. Where you going? I am getting the 2.4GHz UMB with 4GB RAM/320GB Hard Drive. I plan on using an external monitor I already have when in my room through a VGA adapter. I want the thing to be as small and light as possible so that I can bring it everywhere. I also based my decision on the heat issues that UMBP has when running Boot Camp supposedly.

I graduated 1 year ago. I bought a MBP for my last year. I went pro rather than mb because at the time the mb integrated graphics wasn't as good as I wanted, and I had a few 3d rendering projects that I was doing.

The MB have a decent video card now, I would have preferred getting one of those rather than the MBP... cheaper price, lighter... good processors. Hook it up to an external monitor when your doing your difficult programming assignments.

However what you should REALLY be looking for is an ebook reader that you can get your textbooks on. Getting rid of those heavy books in your backpack will make your life much nicer.
