I have been reading up on the problems with the keyboard on the 2017 MacBook Pro. Should this issue have been addressed with the one my son is getting or could the be problems later on?
There are three generations of butterfly keyboard (the type in the MacBook and MacBook Pro)
1st generation: 2015 and 2016 MacBook. 2016 MacBook Pro.
2nd generation: 2017 MacBook, 2017 MacBook Pro.
3rd generation: 2018 MacBook Pro (new models released this week).
Apple have introduced a four year FOC repair program for 2015-2017 keyboards. They haven't said if the third generation is a fix or not. Apple say it was done for noise reasons.
The 2017 one your son is getting will be potentially subject to the problems, but will be covered for four years if it goes wrong. If he gets one of the latest 2018 machines it may have a fix.
Apple say it only affects a tiny proportion of machines. The trouble is most of those affected seem to come to MacRumours forums, giving an impression of much larger proportion ! I have had two susceptible machines without a problem so far.
