I have been reading up on the problems with the keyboard on the 2017 MacBook Pro. Should this issue have been addressed with the one my son is getting or could the be problems later on?

There are three generations of butterfly keyboard (the type in the MacBook and MacBook Pro)

1st generation: 2015 and 2016 MacBook. 2016 MacBook Pro.
2nd generation: 2017 MacBook, 2017 MacBook Pro.
3rd generation: 2018 MacBook Pro (new models released this week).

Apple have introduced a four year FOC repair program for 2015-2017 keyboards. They haven't said if the third generation is a fix or not. Apple say it was done for noise reasons.

The 2017 one your son is getting will be potentially subject to the problems, but will be covered for four years if it goes wrong. If he gets one of the latest 2018 machines it may have a fix.

Apple say it only affects a tiny proportion of machines. The trouble is most of those affected seem to come to MacRumours forums, giving an impression of much larger proportion ! I have had two susceptible machines without a problem so far.

Thank you. I guess it’s like anything in life and things can and do go wrong sometimes..

The problems are there, some have the problems, some do not, but don't worry, the notebooks are covered for up to 4 years from date of purchase under the replacement program Apple launched.

Remember to take pictures of your son unboxing his hard earned present!

I will, his birthday is the 31st July so it will be Hiding unopened until then. He thinks we have to go and pick it up so it will be an extra surprise for him to have it when he wakes up. Have also got a usb hub with a sd card reader, a sleeve and a new rucksack for him to carry it around protected.

Thank you all again for the invaluable advice. He’s going to be supper happy and that makes me happy as well. I just hope he doesn’t read this forum.
