I'm not sure about in Hong Kong, but in the USA at least almost all schools use MS Word. It's not like they won't be exposed to it.
Me neither ;)

I used MS Office in schools as well, but we're talking early 2000s here. All schools I visited after that used Macs and iWork, they didn't even have Office installed. Remember, even teachers can have nasty habits - or incompetent principles ordering Windows PCs.

hmm kids today have it all to easy when i was 10 the most advanced computer i got on christmas was a commodore pet2001 it has a 1mhz processor and has a whopping 8kb ram that was in 1978,
but still have the little pet the serial number is worth a lot today :D even had the disadvantage of having to write my own programs and games in basic could not even download a program from the internet :(

you wonder why i didn't get a Mac because you could not get one back then the original macintosh was invented a couple years later and by then i had other things in my mind then getting my hands on computers :D

Not sure why the older generation always feel the need to compare what they went through - times have changed a lot, and I don't think it's fair to say that it's much 'easier' now - it's just a different generation.

The computers you used back in 'your' days were sufficient for what you were doing.

I was going to say why a laptop for a 10 year old also but I then realized I have had a Mac since I was 8 and a laptop since 13ish. Perhaps a MBA would be a good fit.

I'm 13 (proud owner of a Mac all my life!!), and my family have owned 6 Macs in my life time. Recently I got my own MBP at 10. (Very low spec'd). I have to say I LOVE it but I am VERY careful with my gadj! I also do Photoshopping and had built my own website at 7 :D , so I can justify a Pro. My dad's also a film editor so I do some simple FCPing.

I would probably say go with a MacBook; these Pros don't look like they'll take a fall well.

Well, contratulations on being one of the most well reasoned and articulate 13 year olds I've ever seen posting on any forum, anywhere.

Iam of the opinion that giving a laptop to a 10yr old is irresponsible parenting. If one has to worry about the kid dropping the laptop on a regular basis, then she is not ready to own one.
For those of you who had your first laptop when you were at your early teens.. well, the internet was a safer place then... Online safety and security today is an issue. Iam very sure she"ll be spending most of her time on networking sites like Facebook and all else..
Suggest a desktop iMac at the family room.
But each his own.. Nobody can decide for you.. But be forewarned.. It is not very safe out there..
Wish you the best..

At the age of 7 I was breaking bones and playing outside.

Wish i'd had his excellent acumen at such an early age.

I got a great Emac on ebay for my 2 nephews (6 & 8) for £150.
Its 1.2GHZ Power Pc 512mb Ram.
Came with Tiger and MS Office.
This is mostly used for word processing and educational games.
It can also handle older versions of safari and itunes very well too.
I would recommend one of these over a laptop.

Get her a used Macbook Pro 13. At best 2 Years old. There is no need to buy new tech for Children. First, they do not need it (she is 10) and then she can't honor it (she is 10). Then get her a new one at the age of 12 or even later. Don' waste the money. Safe it for her so she can afford an up to date one when she goes to college. Then she will need it.

A bicycle is a nice idea though ;) again - don't buy a new one ;)

MacBook, and load it up. Then her parents can steal it and use it.

Totally agree.

I think a second hand battered product will be good.

I've always had to pay things myself, now 27 and appreciate money a lot more.

:)

Thanks,

G.
