I know it's a matter of personal taste, but I can honestly say that the butteryfly keyboard was the vilest keyboard I have ever had the misfortune to use on a laptop, so much so that I sold my 2017 MacBook Pro after less than a year and went back to using my 2015 model which I still had, I just couldn't stand it, and wouldn't have bought another MacBook had they continued to use it.
 
Looking at the butterfly and magic versions side by side makes you wonder why they bothered. Certainly for the MacBook Pro, there was just no need to save the .5mm and create half a decade of aggro.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple ends up offering a $400 settlement per defective MacBook with the butterfly keyboard in the form of a voucher towards buying a new M1/M1X based MacBook model with the scissors-switch keyboard. It may sound far-fetched (I'm sure most here agree), but it's a great way to get users to upgrade to the latest Mac technology.
I would be very surprised.

LOL...do a simple Google search on laptop keyboard failure and you'll find all kinds of complaints about these EXACT same types of failures on non-Mac laptops that have scissor mechanisms. Keyboards are one of the most likely components to have issues due their exposure to dirt/dust/crumbs and their heavy use in day-to-day functions of a laptop. There are Lenovo laptop models that have keyboards provided by multiple vendors and consumers will literally order them to find out which vendor has provided the keyboard and then return them if it's the one they don't prefer.

Yep, for me the butterfly keyboard already failed before it even went into the MBP or showed signs of elevated failure rates, just because it was so divisive. Go back and look at all the 2015 12" MacBook reviews, and nobody was ecstatic about what a great keyboard it was... most of the feedback was that it was tolerable or you'd get used to it. That should have been a massive red flag for Apple about messing with the near universally praised MBP keyboard. Something as fundamental as the keyboard can't alienate half of your customers, even if the other half really love it, if you intend to offer it on every notebook you sell.

Wishing them luck. Here in Germany Apple is constantly ripping people off and you can’t do anything. To me it happened 4 times and it cost me a lot of money and time. They just ignore you if you have a good case and good arguments. Support is pathetic. In a 20 minute phone call the guy literally said „the biggest company in the world ... bla bla bla“ 5 times! All this while my complaint was rejected by him. Apple is a joke and of course like myself as a loyal „fan“ has brainwashed people thinking they care. Noooo. They absolutely don’t.
- I am not saying that other companies do it any better. I am just stating my experiences.

Next step lawyer then I guess?

I wonder what ever happened to that member that made a whole thread dedicated to defending his 2019 MBP keyboard he purchased shortly before the 16 inch was released. The buyers remorse hit that one hard. The bitter reality is that the scissor keyboard is perfect and the butterfly keyboard is caca.

The fact that Apple continues to use a keyboard that has almost no key travel is a good indicator that they haven’t really moved away from the design ethos that thinness is better. I don’t think Apple really understands what makes a good Mac (or PC) these days. They are near impossible to fix without paying a great deal of money. Form has truly trumped function in the house that Steve built.

No. They come into place from predatory lawyers who make millions while the consumer gets pennies. If there was ever a perfect job for a republican, it would be class action lawyer.

HAH! I was saying that too, until a key refused to work. *DAMN* Yeah, and now, I get all kinds of repeating keys, and a space bar that decided to stop working unless I really thumped it a couple of weeks ago. I get extra n's and g's, and sometimes spaces, and it's spreading. I freaking hate it, and, damn, so much in my world is falling apart. It's like I'm holding my life wrong...

But seriously, so many 'stores' don't have parts, and the idea of sending my MacBook Pro in 'to have work done' is obnoxious. The stuff you have to do before it's sent in is ridiculous. Makes me think they might just toss my MBP, and I get a 'refurbished' one? Yeah, no... And turnn off 'Find my MacBook'? Why? Where is it going?

And, please people correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't some of the external keyboards ALSO 'butterfly' hot messes?

I had one key that refused to work, and I had to thump it really hard to break whatever was underneath it to get it to work.

So, the 'fixed' keyboards: are they the ones with the silicon condom around the contacts, or is it just the 'same old POC hot mess' it came with originally?

If it's the same crap, why get it fixed? Is the 'scissor keyboard' really that much thicker than the 'butterfly mess'?

Well somebody is putting in the hours. That’s probably not the consumers other than their continuous returns to the Genius Bar and certainly not Apple for not developing a well tested product fit for purpose. Hence lawyers benefit. But sure, proper consumer law would wipe the floor with that system.

The problem with 'testing' is that you can test a product eight ways from Sunday, and ship the thing and find flaws that would have been easy to detect if the testinng actually included that bit in the testing.

Testing only identifies what the testers want to find, either consciously, or unconsciously.

The adage that 'nothing tests like shipping a product' is proven true once again. Apple just seems WAY to invested in that flawed design to realize they needed to toss it, and do their customers a solidd and replace the keyboards as early as they could, rather than continue flogging that mess. *shrug* Instead they continued to dig deeper, and wider...

That's totally subjective. The magic keyboard has received rave reviews and most people (including myself) prefer it to the older 2015 and earlier MacBook Pro keyboards. The key travel is great. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not much better than the butterfly "nonsense". 🙄
You're certainly welcome to buy a computer brand that suits you better. Nobody's stopping you.
 
I remember going into an Apple store and the salesperson outright denied any keyboard problems even though it was getting a lot of attention in the media. I could tell he knew damn well, but wasn't allowed to admit it. That in my opinion is concealing the truth from customers. That was the time I went with Dell / Hackintoshes for a couple years and came back to the Apple ecosystem when they started getting their **** together.
 
Had mine replaced 3x so far and have very little hope it will last any legnth of time after my June 2021 repair program cutoff. Practically begged support to replace it with a 16" but they weren't having any of that.
The magic number is three times. If has to be repaired a third time you can request a new device, it is policy. However, it will not be the same year model and it will be new and a like for like replacement, which means you get an updated model. The caveat is you need to call Apple Care and they will take care of it. However, you have to put a hold on file for the cost of the new laptop until you return the old one. Your cut off date does not matter for the repair as far as replacement goes. As long as Apple does not consider it vintage or obsolette you are good.

why did moderator erase the word fat from my post? Whats wrong with fat if you accept being fat and refer to yourself as fat? Sorry Macrumors but if you have to censor peoples perspectives of their bodies I see this as awkward censorship. Is it illegal to refer to myself as fit because that may offend people who are not fit? If this sort of censorship exists on these forums then I dont want to be part of these forums. My girlfriend accepts herself the way she is and jokes about herself. What other terms are illegal on here? thin, curvy, short, bald? can I say I identify myself as fat? aren't you supposed to respect and accept my self identification?

I’ve had my keyboard replaced 3 times. This is something that I still have issues with (since I havent upgraded yet) but it’s out of warranty.
When did you replace it last time? As soon as the models with the new keyboards came out you should have sold your old one immediately if it was out of warranty.

I would have loved to. But they charge an insane amount for their laptops and for me, I can’t replace it every time they come out with new hardware.
the last time I had it replaced before the 1 year warranty was up. Did not purchase the extended warranty which was also my bad. Won’t make that mistake again but I had not had any issues in the past.
 
Apparently I am an insane person, the MB butterfly keyboard was actually my favourite keyboard I have ever used.

It had a bit of a learning curve at first, but after a couple of days with it I loved it. I still have one of the MBs with that keyboard sitting next to my iMac, and any type of longform writing happens on the MB. I was really disappointed at the move away from it, and have been resistant to upgrading the Macbook for fear of losing it.

Granted, I have also always been the sole person who seems to hate the massive clicky mechanical keyboards that everyone loves. I guess I am just a very different typist from most.
