Hi

I'm hoping to get your collective wisdom on a matter.

I have a new MBP 13, i5 and am trialling a Blackmagic eGPU. I have started to play Rise of the Tomb Raider as I understand it supports eGPUs. However my fans in the MBP still keep maxing out - is this normal?

The eGPU is definitely working as I can see it in Activity Monitor.

Are my hopes of a quiet gaming machine shattered :)

Thanks

B

PS - I am wanting to run it without an external monitor, so getting the graphics back on to the MBP display

Laptops do not make "quiet gaming machines". They got to get rid of that heat somehow and that would be the fans.

Ah. I was pretty sure that the videos on Macworld said that the machines run pretty quiet with the eGPU. Maybe that was just the 15” or I misunderstood what they were saying.

It's not the eGPU that's the issue - as the message Mac2k5 states, it's the CPU load from the game.

If you're doing tasks that have high GPU but low CPU load then the fans should not spin up. Games that tax the GPU typically are resource intensive all-around.
