Hi guys,

I own a MBP 2017 i7/16/512. I decided to go with the 15 inch model because I felt it’s much more responsive and powerful.
Now since Apple released the 2018 MBP I’m concidering to get the 13 inch model.
Configuration should be like 13/16/512/i5.
I love the size but I don’t want to lose the performance. Technically the CPU should be about the same in terms of performance, right?
What do you think? And what do you think about the missing 2nd GPU?

Looking forward to read about your thoughts.

Best,
Kevin

If you need a small form factor go with MBP 13 Mid 2018. Technically it does not make any sense since dGPU gives you a boost for a long time and older CPU gen in some aspects better (thermals, power consumption). I suggest to wait for a model with 10nm CPU and then replace current model.

I had the same and got rid of mine to decide what i want to do next. I considered 13” 2018 as that should equal cpu performance while increasing portability and be able to charge quicker off my battery bank and in the future get the egpu from Apple to use if i need more gpu power with my 5k ultra fine

Do you do anything that depends on the GPU?

Difficult to say... benchmarks show the quad-core Coffee Lake chips to be on par with the last-generation Kaby Lake quad-core chips. I do think the higher TDP of the Kaby Lake quad-core will give it the edge in sustained workloads though. How serious of a video editor are you?

Also, there is no comparison between the integrated GPU in the 13” and the dedicated graphics card in the 15”. Again, not sure how much of an impact this will have on your usage though...

IMO, the Kaby Lake 15” is the superior machine.
