Hi, I'm fixing, upgrading and optimizing a MacBook Pro 13" mid 2009 (MacBookPro5,5) from a friend of mine. I know it officially supports OS X El Capitan, but I've discovered that you can actually patch a newer OS and get it to work via dosdude1's.

I've maxed the MBP out, meaning it has an Intel P7550 2.26GHz, 2x4GB = 8GB 1333Hz RAM, a 240GB SSD and nVIDIA GF 9400M 256MB (takes memory from RAM so it should perform "very fast" compared to the original 2GB 1066Hz RAM installed).

Now, I want to patch and install the very latest best macOS it can handle as fluent or better than OS X El Capitan. I could try Catalina, but this is the first time I'm doing anything with an Apple product. I'm very savvy about PCs, laptops and Windows, indeed I repair and optimize them, though I have never worked with Apple, hence the thread.

Basically, I wanted to know about those MacBook5,5 owners that have installed Catalina, if they are experiencing a nice fluent system, or if there are any errors happening, some basic apps not working correctly, etc... For example, I've read this thread of a user owning a 5,5 saying that overtime, the laptop started to not boot correctly, but then he says something about RAM having problems since always.

I was worried about the new Metal graphics, but dosdude1 apparently does not mention anything that could worsen the experience in an older laptop, indeed one of his screenshots is an older MBP than mine running Mojave, which also has Metal graphics. So, apparently, everything should go fine with Catalina, but I want to make sure and read about your experiences.

Also, I was worried about what the patch can do to UEFI or something that goes deeper than the HDD. I am using a fresh new empty SSD, so I don't mind having to format it. What I fear is that somehow the patch can modify UEFI or something, break it and then being unable to boot from a USB to install OS X or whatever. Can this happen? Or this process will only affect the SSD and at any time I can plug in a Bootable USB and start fresh?

Thank you!

OK, I've decided to try it, I've followed the tutorial, fairly easy, every step worked fine, but this is the second time I'm installing Catalina and the very same thing happens: after it's correctly installed and reboots, the white screen with the logo and loading bar, right before showing the first setup for Catalina, the loading bar gets stuck right at the very end, 100% of the bar complete but it does not goes on and show the initial setup.

I'm actually using right now an HDD, not an SSD, but anyway, it's been stuck for more than 1h, for the second time reinstalling it. What should I do? Leave it for hours?

NVM, I hard reset it, but instead of going to the bootable to reinstall for the third time hoping it won't stuck in the same place, I let it load again Catalina. This time, the bar didn't stuck and I'm now configuring everything. Looks like I finally got it. So, basically, after the first restart, it will stuck in the loading bar, you have to hard reset it and turn it on again, and let it do it again.
