Hard to think what it could be other than a hardware defect. Fortunately the kind of thing that can repaired under warranty. I suppose if you call Apple, they can verify that's the best thing to do.
It seems a hardware issue related to the LEDs.
You better bring it to a store to check, if under warranty (probably I assume), it can be replaced with a new display.
I had a screen issue with my new MacBook Pro. My local Apple Store did the screen replacement the same day. It just took 4 days to get a screen/top case due to this being a new model and repair parts are scarce.
