Hi everyone,
I am soon looking to buy the 14 inch MacBook Pro and there is a bit of confusion which is mostly induced by the lack of availability and long shipping delays.

I have determined that all I need personally is the base 14 inch with 8 core cpu and 512gb ssd. However, it comes with the "slow" charger. But I can get it from Apple Store or other retailers immediately. I can also step up to the 1tb model, and the 1tb ssd would be nice but something I can do without. It comes with the 96w charger, however. Both of these models have much better availability than the custom configs.

I have a 2016 256gb mbp, which had excellent battery life for the first few years, but its gotten old and I do need to charge twice a day on busy days. I am used to charging my devices overnight too. I have also never run out of storage, as I tend to delete files or back them up externally.

I would like to have the new laptop asap and am happy to spend the extra money on the 1tb model, as the upgrades will do me nicely.

The question is - is the 96w charger really worth it over the 67w? And would the 67w really be that slow comparitively?
 
My 14” base lasts about two work days so I just charge it overnight with the 67 w charger.

I've seen the pictures comparing the size of the 67W vs 96W but haven't seen what the weight difference is and wonder if there is much in it. Does anyone know? If not, as a starting point would someone with either of the two chargers mind weighing it for me please?

96W charges the device from 0 - 50% in 30 minutes. Then from 50% to 100%, it's about an hour. So total charging time about 1.5 hours with 96W charger.

67W charges the device from 0 - 50% in an hour. Then from 50% to 100%, it's also about an hour. So total charging time about 2 hours, or a bit over.

But seriously, you can just get a compact 100W charger off of Amazon:

It's just as small as the 67W charger but it'll definitely charge the device up pretty fast.

Keep in mind the 96W and 140W chargers are bundled because of the higher CPU/GPU power draw. Fast charging is only a secondary benefit. Even with a 67W charger, you'll be fully charged in about 2 hours.

Even at max load, the M1 Pro 14" and 16" don't exceed 96W. The 14" barely exceeds 65W (at max HDR brightness) when the SoC is completely maxed out, versus the 16" barely exceeding 96W. Even if we were to go with the M1 Max, the 14" will barely even reach 90W.

96W and 140W are included really just because they can be used to fast charge the devices.

You need to include the power requirements of the display. The M1 Max has been measured up to 92W by Anandtech. The display easily consumes 20W. Then add any peripherals attached to the Thunderbolt ports.

Well, that was worst-case when both CPU and GPU are stressed to their absolute limits with a benchmark.

Also, Anandtech measured that 92W on the 16". The 14" won't be able to sustain that over long term. It'll drop slightly due to thermal, and so it'll still fit... neatly into the 96W charger.

In regular use, there's no workload that can stress the chip to its absolute limits like that, so there's no need to even think about it. You can't get the chip to that number in any app or game.

Apple already calculated it all. You'd think if they didn't, they would have included the 140W brick with the 14" M1 Max.
 
I don't understand the crying over charging (any device). Do people not charge their devices overnight as normal? Once I'm done with my laptop I just charge it. Same for iPhone and iWatch. What's so hard? There's been a few times when I wasn't able to charge, and even then it's not a big deal.
