Dear forum,

Thanks to TG Pro , I discovered that my CPU cores can run high in temp when using (for example) chrome with multiple tabs, plus spotify and other apps. The CPU cores quickly go to 90+ degrees and eventually the macbook shuts down. Before this I applied thermal paste to the GPU part. I was wondering if you would have any recommendations to tackle my problem? I notices that my fans also make more noise than when I bought the original product. Maybe a vent replacement?

Pleased to hear back.

I'm having similar issues, but I have not found enough answers online that help. I'm currently using a Macbook Pro Retina Late-2013 15". One day, I was just watching movies on my laptop, and then it suddenly started shutting down. Just the night before, it was working perfectly fine and I was using my laptop to watch netflix on chrome.

I've done all the PRAM NVRAM resets, disk utility first aid, and cleanmymac optimizations, but my computer still keeps shutting down randomly. When I do Apple Diagnostic tests, all the hardware comes out with no errors.

At times, it can handle certain programs (for me it's serato, ableton, excel, or microsoft desktop) but when I use programs like chrome or firefox, it will shutdown. Sometimes I don't even have to be using any program and it will shut down - it's because the computer is indexing and there are multiple instances of the mdworker_shared apps eating up most of my computer's activity.

The things that I did not yet try is doing a clean install of the MacOS to see if it was an issue with my operating system files or applying new thermal paste on the mac.

After my extensive testing and googling, the last culprit could be is that the Macbook RAM could have gone bad, and now I am currently looking into buying a new macbook pro.

It's weird because I think I got this same issue with my computer on Feb. 27 - which isn't too far from you. Have you found any solutions since then? If not, I hope we can eventually get a fix for this. I'd love to keep my macbook pro running if possible, but I am on the verge of buying a new one very soon.

The fact that it shuts down suggests that your thermal management system is not working properly. Usually, when reaching high temperatures, the CPU would be power-throttled, which stabilizes the temperature. Do I understand it correctly that you replaced thermal paste yourself? If so, it’s possible that there was some mistake on your part. Also, the Laptop is over 7 years old now, which is very advanced age for this type of device. It could be just showing some deterioration from age. Frankly, I would look into replacing it altogether. Involved repairs on a computer this old are rarely economical.

How much dust is inside the heatsink and the fans? If they're filled with dust, it's not wonders your machine overheats.

Intel mobile CPUs at 90°C is not unnormal. They're fine up to 100°C. Then they throttle to keep temps at or below 100°C.

When you applied thermal paste, did you also replaced the thermal paste of the CPU and did you also screwed in the parts with enough pressure to the heatpipes are properly seated against the CPU and GPU?

If your machine is more than 4 years old, the thermal paste that came with it is probably not really good anymore. And if you removed the heatsink and screwed it back on with the same old thermal paste, this is just asking for problems
