Well I got the machine yesterday and it is awesome. Haven't found any issues with it and have migrated (manually) most of my stuff over to it. I will say that I'm very happy with the performance. It is definitely zipping along... faster in every way it seems compared to the Dual G5 2.0Ghz Power Mac. This is going to be great when I get my three machines consolidated into this one. I do think I would have liked the new touchpad a lot better, but I'll get used to this. I will be using it in clamshell mode most of the time anyways. I read a lot about heat in clamshell mode hurting the display, but its been running very cool. I have it propped up slightly (about an inch in the back) so that air can circulate... not sure if that is helping. I was expecting this to come with the remote, which it didn't. I did pop the 4G of RAM in, but I'm not going to mess with the drive replacement any time soon. I am using the 320G 7200 drive I bought as backup. I cloned the Power Mac drive to it and am using that to slowly migrate my apps over.

congrates and welcome!!! a really good deal u got there :)

is this a good deal?

I saw on apple.com a refurb 15.4 MBP 2.6 ghz, 200gb 7200 rpm, nvidia geforece 8600 with 512 mb, only 2 gb but can easily upgrade. For 1799.00, Any thoughts? Good deal or stay away from?

1800 is pushing it for an older generation.. i paid 1200 from mine through UCSD's bookstore.. of course thats an academic rate. Also considering the refurbished part.. does that affect eligibility for warranty (IE applecare)? if not and you feel like its what you want to get, then do it. But for a few hundred more a lower end glassbook pro can be had.. but thats if you like the glassyness..

Well, the 2.6Ghz model was the top of the line a few months ago and sold for about $3K... so comparing it to the low end current models is not a fair comparison. I am quite happy with mine.... and glad I went with this instead of the newer "glassbook". I think I've already mentioned the reasons.. but I'll try to repeat them here. I have a 30" display, and I would have had to buy a $100 adapter to use it with the new ones, while the older one has the port right on it. I love the matte display and don't like the glossy. And I am using the extra firewire port. Would I have paid $300 more for it... hard to say. Knowing what I know now, I probably would have. But then mine was new and yours is a refurb. I don't know what the refurb entails... so you might want to see if that has any effect on the warranty.

Apple, and you, should treat it as a new machine. It comes with a year applecare which you can extend for an additional two years by buying the applecare extension.

The apple refurb site is selling it in glossy and matte for $1499, which is excellent, considering it was $2500 right before the refresh.

I was talking to a friend about my 2.4 unibody, and she was asking if it ran cooler than her 17" MBP from last Christmas. She handed me her machine and the bottom of it was quite toasty after an hour of running safari and word for pete's sake! After telling her my uni was cool to the touch, she was considering the new model. Other than that quibble, I'd say it's an excellent deal.
