Could this be some strange logic board defect?

He probably has a defective nvidia card. I think Apple covers that up to 3 years...with a normal warranty...you should tell him to check it out :)

I have one with the faulty Nvidia, but that's late-2008 and unibody. This one is not. I'm not even sure that these older MB Pros have Nvidia.

This one is mid or late 2008. It has an nVidia card I'm pretty sure…

That is an early 2008. released in Feb replaced in October with the Unibody. It has the crappy 8600 gt. it is under warranty for 3 year from date of purchase.
