He probably has a defective nvidia card. I think Apple covers that up to 3 years...with a normal warranty...you should tell him to check it out 🙂

This one is not. I'm not even sure that these older MB Pros have Nvidia.

That is an early 2008. released in Feb replaced in October with the Unibody. It has the crappy 8600 gt. it is under warranty for 3 year from date of purchase.
